This is it! The powerful, full-bodied, strong beer which is Andechs’s trademark. Brewed in the traditional Triple Mash procedure and available throughout the year, not just during the "Starkbierzeit"!

When the evening passes into dusk and the day draws to a close, time goes a little slower. Just the right time for a glass of Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel. Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel – mouthcoating, velvety, strong This world famous bock from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain is not meant to be rushed, but savoured slowly. As solid as a rock, Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel presides over the evening meal with a colour reminiscent of dark copper with nuances of fiery red. Its clear gleaming look harmonises with its firm, fine pored head. Also the aroma delights the connoisseur: soft roasted accents and a nuance of dried fruit carrying a vein of caramel. This Doppelbock Dunkel from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain presents a pleasant effervescence. And then there’s the unmistakable flavour: mouthcoating and velvety, strong and yet pleasantly malty – a powerful, robust body. At the same time, it develops an easily recognisable sweetness, embraced in roasted cocoa and a light, bitter hoppiness. Concluding with a powerful punch, this Doppelbock departs with a lingering aftertaste of quality plain chocolate. A strong Doppelbock that embodies the centuries old Benedictine brewing tradition, sip by delicious sip (original extract: 18.5%, abv: over 7.1%).

A dark, ruby-red beer with a firm, brown layer of foam. It has a sweet, syrup like aroma with the touch of chocolate and caramel. It has quite a balanced taste between sweet and bitter, but also some licorice and chocolate. The aftertaste is nice and bitter.

Ruby beer with a small, short lasting, beige, almost yellow head. Aromas of intense cherry wood, coffee, alcohol, floral and herbal hops, licorice, caramel, malt and yeast . Full of roasted malt in taste, coffee, light peppery notes together with fruity alcohol, sparkling afterglow. Full body, soft carbonation, oily texture. Aroma could be less "plain" malty, apart from that really good.

On tap at Gourmet Haus Staudt in Redwood City, CA. Aroma is MALTS on MALTS on MALTS, sorghum syrup, raisins, lots of dried fruit. Taste is a little more mellow (but welcome) with some creaminess and light stale breadiness on the finish (also welcome). One of the best malty German beers I’ve had.

Review based on the BJCP215 guidelines (style 9A). Bottle 50 cl - Batch unknown. AROMA: significant malt aroma with some caramelized notes and Maillard products (bread crust). slight vinous background. no hop aroma discernible. APPEARANCE: ruby body color and translucent. average ivory head with good retention. TASTE: very nice malty flavour with a lot of Maillard products. slight caramel note. low bitterness with an almost sweet finish. PALATE: medium-full body with moderate carbonation. very faint alcohol warmth. OVERALL: a very good example of a doppelbock with great complexity. recommended.
