3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
500ml bottle @ the 2nd Shrewsbury Bottle Share, courtesy of me, bought at Berlin Bier Shop. Pours a chestnut brown, sweet & sticky with prominent dried fruits. Didn’t really get into this to be honest, despite this being one of Blackhaddock’s all time favourites!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Paid $3.49 for a 16.9 oz. bottle @ Carl’s Meat Market, Kittery. I was REALLY excited to see this because until recently, it was not available in the U.S. What a great price! Dark cloudy amber color with light retention that shows spider web lace in a dimpled mug. Nose of tons of bready malt. Hints of dark fruit, (prunes and raisins)
Flavor is sweet lightly toasted malts, nuttiness, somewhat grainy caramels with a touch of chocolate, a good amount of dried fruits, and a light bitterness from a European hop variety. Light earthy hop. The hop notes is needed to balance the sweetness. The other notable flavor is the amount of yeast. Almost has a Belgian yeast essence to it. Thick body with a bold flavor. Light creamy mouthfeel from the carbonation.
I’m really happy to have finally have tried this. Maybe one day I will travel to Germany. But until then I’m glad I can now find this here in the U.S. Beautiful brew.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Poured into stein from 500ml bottle. A reddy brown with off white head. Mild carbonation. Aroma is malty with caramel and raisins. Taste is roasted malt, caramel, dark fruits. Interesting and complex. Slightly bitter in the finish. Maybe even a bit bit nutty. Mouthfeel is dry and warming. Sweet and alcoholic but in not way over bearing. Fantastic.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Draught at Bronwyn, November 2013
Probably the last thing I was expecting to see at this (then) new German restaurant in Union Square. A little background. This beer was never distributed in the U.S. until very recently and back in the day (talking 2004-2007 era), there were no German traders on the site, so it was very difficult to have this without traveling there. And wow was it rated highly by just about everyone.
So long story short, here I am 8 years later and finally get to try this much sought after beer.
Deep ruby-mahogany liquid is clear with a small but fairly well-retained layer of light beige foam atop it.
Prunes, raisins, red wine, touches of bananas, lightly salted caramel, vanilla...I could probably go on for a while here. Sweet, but not cloyingly so, a touch sour but simply from the reserved melanoidins and ever-so vinous and dry on the finish. Eminently sniffable with a good strength to it. No flaws or alcohol.
Flavor is...good lord, this is why this stuff was so highly regarded! Aside from the perfect maltiness, rich but well-attenuated, very nice depth (plums, wine, caramel, vanilla, etc...) and kiss of hop spiciness, there is something so endearing and unique about their yeast character. Difficult to describe, but my best attempt is think of a Westy 8 blended with, say, Celebrator. It’s certainly got black pepper phenols, plum and red currant-like fruitiness and even a touch of very light banana ester. Soft mouthfeel with light but ample carbonation. No flaws noted. Love the abv too. Pretty close to perfect.

4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Wonderful doppelbock. Rich malty full bodied beer. Alcohol warmth and sweetness but doesn’t overpower. Aroma is of mild molasses like notes. Color is a deep mahogany. Flavor is complex with Brown bread, lingering alcohol sweetness and slight hop bitterness just to balance and keep it from cloying. Body is medium full. Finish is moderately dry. Lingering hop and alcohol persist in the finish.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
500 ml bottle. Pours a brilliant dark amber , copper color with a large rocky beige head. Big caramel malt aroma has notes of toasted nuts and a light metallic tinge. Rich sweet roasted malt flavor has lots of sweet caramel and milk chocolate nuance. Full bodied and complex, with a big sticky mouthfeel. Finishes slightly bittersweet and chewy. Outstanding.
