This is it! The powerful, full-bodied, strong beer which is Andechs’s trademark. Brewed in the traditional Triple Mash procedure and available throughout the year, not just during the "Starkbierzeit"!

When the evening passes into dusk and the day draws to a close, time goes a little slower. Just the right time for a glass of Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel. Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel – mouthcoating, velvety, strong This world famous bock from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain is not meant to be rushed, but savoured slowly. As solid as a rock, Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel presides over the evening meal with a colour reminiscent of dark copper with nuances of fiery red. Its clear gleaming look harmonises with its firm, fine pored head. Also the aroma delights the connoisseur: soft roasted accents and a nuance of dried fruit carrying a vein of caramel. This Doppelbock Dunkel from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain presents a pleasant effervescence. And then there’s the unmistakable flavour: mouthcoating and velvety, strong and yet pleasantly malty – a powerful, robust body. At the same time, it develops an easily recognisable sweetness, embraced in roasted cocoa and a light, bitter hoppiness. Concluding with a powerful punch, this Doppelbock departs with a lingering aftertaste of quality plain chocolate. A strong Doppelbock that embodies the centuries old Benedictine brewing tradition, sip by delicious sip (original extract: 18.5%, abv: over 7.1%).

Pours with a nice 1/2" light khaki head... the brew is dark brown with beautiful garnet highlights... good lacing. Nose is dark toast... very malty... light caramel... Flavor mirrors the nose... no chocolate like some darker versions (like Celebrator)... just pure malty goodness... something that I associate with dates with warmth, so does a grainy sweetness. Very smooth body... the head is so creamy it almost feels like nitro. Worthy of the hunt and the reputation.

Largish bottle into German glass. Dark ruby but still transparent. Malt cola aroma and cola taste. Slightly sweet malt dominated. Alcohol hidden. Pretty good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

500ml bottle. Pours a dark mahogany colour. The head does not last. The aroma of this is fruit, dark chocolate and brown sugar. The taste is very good indeed. Medium heavy sweet with light bitterness maybe some unami. It is rich and satisfying. lightly carbonated. Really good stuff.

Tap. Pours clear copper chestnut, medium beige head, dissipates quickly but leaves nice lacing. Aroma is malty, roasty, black tea. Flavor is rich, malty, cocoa, hints of coffee, roasted malt, toasted rye bread, tea tones. Medium body, soft mouthfeel.

Poured into a pilsner glass, the appearance was a rich dark brown color. A rich semi-thick one finger-ed eggshell white foamy head started and dissipated. Smooth foamy rings of lace form nicely. The aroma starts with rich sweet dark fruity bread. Rich sweet roasty nuts with sweet milk chocolate malt balls comes through to blend with the Lager yeast very nicely. Robust enough to bring about caramel and toffee portions. Candied fruits somewhat show their face as it warms. The flavor takes in all of the previously mentioned aromas sweetly with a nice bready smooth aftertaste leading into a sly dark fruity sort of finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a damn nice sessionability about it. Carbonation feels low. Slight sticky but acceptable. Overall, damn nice doppelbock. Of course, why knock the Germans on their own style.

Bottle. Pours a dark red-brown with a soft, creamy, shallow, off-tan head. Nose is dried fruit, port wine, chocolate, vanilla, roast nuts, and a very faint edge of salinity. On the tongue, it’s exceedingly rich and complex; this is a doppelbock that veers closely to being a stout in body and layers of flavor. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, and the alternating touches of dark dried fruit and nuttiness is perfect. I see why this is a hundred pointer.

There’s really nothing quite like the enjoyment you get from pouring a German brew from one of those distinct bullet-shaped bottles into thick-walled mug. The best feeling is knowing you get to enjoy it all to yourself. Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel has a clear brown body and a thick eggshell-colored head. Candied fruit and toasted sugar aromatics. Flavors are both rustically simple yet quite complex (for a Lager). Molasses, fruitiness, caramel, bread, chocolate, and a bit of hoppiness near the finish. Completely smooth feel. This one’s easygoing yet works best when enjoyed over a period of time to experience how the starchiness comes out as it warms. Slowly enjoying this with Sleep’s Holy Mountain playing nearby seems like a wholly appropriate idea.

Aroma: intense maltiness with some molasses; Appearance: very dark amber with offiwhite head that lingers; Taste: follows nose with some additional vanilla and molasses; reminds me of Christmas cookies; Palate: medium body with long, sweet finish; Overall: can appreciate it but not my favorite style. Would not get again.
