imdownthepub (4043), Banbury, Oxfordshire, Oxfordshire, England Dec 18, 2004 Bottled in Centimetre1, Wien. Dark brown red colour with big head. Licorice flavours emerge from a dry hard sharp base. Nutty alcohol notes tire the palate.
ucusty (1062), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Sep 4, 2008 A fine example of the style! Dark brown pour with a tan head.Nose is malty and hints at toasted whole grain bread.First sip reveals a slight acidity with sweet ripe fruit. Excellent balance, full bodied with a rich malty flavor what more could you ask for. Bierkrug (12), Mackenrodt, Germany Sep 1, 2008 I am not a Doppelbock fan but I must try all of the beers from Andechs.
I can get this in bottles from my local market. It is good with a meal but hard to drink in mass on a hot day. jfb (42), Freising, Germany Sep 1, 2008 (bottle) clear, dark ruby-red colour, frothy off-white head. aroma is a quite harmonious blend of roasted notes, dark fruits, chocolate and cornflakes. flavour has a fresh roasted malt base with more dark fruits and chocolate. medium body and carbonation, light bitter and warming finish. nicely balanced, could be more flavourful. GAManiac (294), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Aug 28, 2008 Pours dark, dark brown with a big fluffy tan head that recedes to a cap leaving big clumps of lacing. The beers has a nice hazy amber tint when held up to the light.
Smell is headlined by a big caramel malt background with some brown sugar, dark fruits and spices. There was also a hint of hops in the nose as well.
Very complex taste that starts with a dry, roasted caramel malt sweetness. There is a cola sweetness on the palate with some sugar and dark fruits. The hops and slight dry character keep the sweetness in check and maintain a great balance.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with enough carbonation to leave the tastes dancing around on the palate between sips.
This is an extremely well-balanced and drinkable dobblebock. I’d probably put it a strong second among dobblebocks I’ve tasted. Highly recommended! hophead_hans (573), Bay Area, California, USA Aug 27, 2008 Bottle. Pours with a reddish copper color. Velvety texture and aromas of dark fruit and caramel. Flavors of malt candy, quite sweet with no alcohol hotness. Some more complexities develop as it warms up, such as caramel and some toastiness.
