This is it! The powerful, full-bodied, strong beer which is Andechs’s trademark. Brewed in the traditional Triple Mash procedure and available throughout the year, not just during the "Starkbierzeit"!

When the evening passes into dusk and the day draws to a close, time goes a little slower. Just the right time for a glass of Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel. Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel – mouthcoating, velvety, strong This world famous bock from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain is not meant to be rushed, but savoured slowly. As solid as a rock, Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel presides over the evening meal with a colour reminiscent of dark copper with nuances of fiery red. Its clear gleaming look harmonises with its firm, fine pored head. Also the aroma delights the connoisseur: soft roasted accents and a nuance of dried fruit carrying a vein of caramel. This Doppelbock Dunkel from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain presents a pleasant effervescence. And then there’s the unmistakable flavour: mouthcoating and velvety, strong and yet pleasantly malty – a powerful, robust body. At the same time, it develops an easily recognisable sweetness, embraced in roasted cocoa and a light, bitter hoppiness. Concluding with a powerful punch, this Doppelbock departs with a lingering aftertaste of quality plain chocolate. A strong Doppelbock that embodies the centuries old Benedictine brewing tradition, sip by delicious sip (original extract: 18.5%, abv: over 7.1%).

500mL bottle purchased at Bierkoning on my Amsterdam trip and consumed in KC. Best before 28/03/12. Pours with a clear dark color and a small quickly fading head. Small bubble are visible as they travel to the surface of the beer. Aroma is strong earthy prune with leafiness. It is very novel and intense but not sweet and well-attenuated. Its different drinking a beer that doesn’t get all its flavor from either hops or ester rich yeast. Some weird caramel in there as well. Flavor is like tree caramel and not sweet. Dark bark/earth at the end of the flavor and it sticks around. Sweetness is there just not sugary. Easy to drink yet full of flavor. Split with two others and poured into a Stone IS snifter glass.

I do not wax on poetically about beer but I do know the quality of a beer once tasted. This review is not about my tastes but reinforces the numbers, which are arbitrary.

Aroma: toasty, roasty, caramel, chocolate, alcohol, toffee, Appearance: brown with reddish tint, off-white head, good retention. Taste: low bitterness, light sweetness, roasty, chocolate, nuts, toast, bread, alcohol, raisins and vanilla. Impressed. Palate: medium-full body, slick feel, average carbonation, long smooth finish. Overall: A nice sipper that I will gladly return to.

Tap at churchkey in DC. Dark copper plum with thick off white head. Dark fruit nose. Malty. Malty sweet and tangy grain. Slight caramel taste. Otherwise the malty grain dominates. Dark fruit is low in the taste. Finish is ok. Medium body. I wanted more layers and depth, but decent.

Quite impressive in aroma and taste: quite similar to Schlenkerla’s products, but without the bitterness added from the smoked malts. Strong lager with quite unique presence of malts and sweetness... overall, pretty good doppelbock.
