3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
500mL bottle purchased at Bierkoning on my Amsterdam trip and consumed in KC. Best before 28/03/12. Pours with a clear dark color and a small quickly fading head. Small bubble are visible as they travel to the surface of the beer. Aroma is strong earthy prune with leafiness. It is very novel and intense but not sweet and well-attenuated. Its different drinking a beer that doesnít get all its flavor from either hops or ester rich yeast. Some weird caramel in there as well. Flavor is like tree caramel and not sweet. Dark bark/earth at the end of the flavor and it sticks around. Sweetness is there just not sugary. Easy to drink yet full of flavor. Split with two others and poured into a Stone IS snifter glass.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
500ml bottle from Gourmondo.de, clear dark reddish brown colour, large frothy off-white head, decent lacing. Heavily malty aroma of plums, nuts and a bit of chocolate, moderate herbal and resiny hops. Taste is initially modreately sweet, slightly bitter and acidic, turning into a long light bitter and roasty finish with a moderately alcoholic and acetic feel.Full body, creamy texture, lively carbonation. Certainly one of the better doppelbocks Iíve tried though not an aficionado of the style.

3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle from Berrmerchants.com Colour is cherrywood brown, medium to large off white head. Nose is nutty, earthy, caramel, boiled sweet, slight mahogany wood, Autumn leaves. Itís like a strong English bitter. Taste is caramel, nutty, woody, earthy hops, roasted/toasty malt. Itís got a very nutty, earthy, mahogany wood tang which is not really my thing.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle in Frankfurt. It pours clear mahogany brown with a thick light tan head. The nose is caramel, toast, raisin, sultana, dried cherry, wood and vinous notes. The taste is toasty, earth, wood, leather, cocoa, plenty of dried fruits, light spice and decent bitterness with a dry, woody finish. Medium+ body and moderate carbonation. Well rounded and pretty flavoursome. A great doppelbock.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Truly a great doppelbock with excellent sweet malty character the shows layers of complexity between caramel candy, sweet chocolate, bitter chocolate, hints of fruit. Great stuff.

Donít really know a great deal about the style. An enjoyable ale, sweet, vinuous. Tastes the 7.1% ABV but very drinkable.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
500 ml bottle. Not totally sure why I bought this, but Iím glad I did. Pours clear, dark brown with ruby hues and off white, fine-bubbled head. Beautiful, lush malty aroma: dark fruit, plums, rich dark molasses, even some cocoa. Taste: moderately sweet with a surprisingly dry, roast finish. Love the complexity here. Palate: full body, velvety texture, light carbonation. Overall: itís telling that Iím always surprised by how flavorful and multi-faceted these malt-focused classics can be. Itís definitely something I donít seek out or find much when following my usual tendencies, and that is to my detriment.

3.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours dark brown with beige head. Very nice, malty aroma. Taste a bit flat. Lightish beer, almost delicate. Definately not the strongest in its class.
