Abundantly malty aroma with notes of dark fruit (plum, prune, raisin), toasted malts. Clear, dark, amber-brown with ruby tones. Copious, fine-bubbled, tan head recedes to ample cover. Rich, thick malt flavour dominates. Progresses from sweet to lightly fruity (raisins, prunes, plums) to toasty to a long, moderately bitter, dry finish. Fine bubbles are engaging on the tongue while mouthfeel is soft yet full. Flavour and aroma open up to reveal it’s full majesty as it warms. Far more subtle and elegant than some other highly touted doppelbocks, this displays a full range of flavours without bludgeoning the tastebuds with any particular flavour. Sensational. Enjoyed with MartinT and Rastacouere.

Sep 18, 2008 Small light brown head. Deep brownish red body. Deep strong earthy caramelly malt aroma with roasty oily toffee notes and traces of wild berries. Dry-sweet roasty caramelly taste with earthy notes. Light mouthfeel. Chocolatey toffee can also be noted. Sweetish wooden caramel finish with minty notes. Lovely! (0.1l taster from bottle at EBF’08.)

Sep 14, 2008 Bottle @ EBF. Nice brown color. Aroma was a bit murky with some fruity and malty notes along with some bread. Flavor was malty with some fruity and sweet notes. Not as good as expected.

Sep 13, 2008 This was a gift from beeryum some time ago, opened at the faculty Oktoberfest. Poured a rich mahogany with a tall creamy off-white head which refused to dissipate. Rich aroma hits of smoke, raisins, pipe tobacco, biscuit dough and caramel toffee, alluring and inviting. Flavor is a mix of sweet and dry, with notes of raisins, molasses and caramel, a touch of toffee. Terrific, terrific beer, reminding me why this is my favorite German style. As the bottle emptied to the sound of the overwhelming praise of my fellow faculty members, I could not help but curse my inability to get more of this brew.
