Pours crystal clear. Kind of looks like yellow water and the taste confirms the suspicion. Average.

Looks great. Pale yellow with white head. A light tasting helles. A nice bier. Malty. Crisp finish and slight bitterness. Would be great on a summers day.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours bright yellow into a stein. Bright white soapy head with good retention recedes leaving spider lacing. Bread and metallic aromas. Crisp with bread and hay upfront turning slightly bitter earth in the dry, medium-length finish.

4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
UPDATED: APR 12, 2014 I tried to clear my high expectations for this beer from my mind before tasting to avoid disappointment. Of course, you can never really do that but in this case, it doesn’t matter because this beer is absolutely fantastic. Its weak point might be appearance: it is rather headless, albeit w/ a nice, bright golden color. I can overlook that, though, because everything else about this is absolutely top notch. The nose is of fresh cracked grain and gentle, herbal notes from the hops. As nice as the aroma is, this beer really hits its stride when you taste it. There is only a slight touch of sweetness but it has a full malt character regardless. Its firm bitterness compliments the malts rather than simply bringing balance, an effect which is enhanced by just a touch of salty mineral character. Both the sweetness and the bitterness linger on the tongue just long enough to remind you that you want another sip. People, beer is brewing and beers like this are what brewing is about. This takes what is undoubtedly a simple recipe and makes from it a truly drinkable, flavorful and memorable beer that tastes better with each sip. This, my friends, is real beer.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
From 500ml bottle. Pours clean, lemon yellow. Decent head that dissipates slowly, but completely. Mild carbonation. Aroma is lots of grains, sweet grass, lemon bitters and faint rubber. Taste is crusty bread, hay, folded hops and a back drop of citrus. Very bright and even tasting. Bubbles in the mouth. Complex for style, but basic in a broader sense. This is a classic helles from a Germany’s only monastic brewery.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Grain golden colour with a white head. No visible CO2. Aromas of bread, grain and well balanced malt and hop notes arise. Tastes lightly bitter a bit lively with a fine body with a lasting dryness as finish on the palate.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pours clear golden with small head. Aroma seems slightly off. Flavour is almost non-existing, a slight sourness. Not the best offering from Andechs and a bit of a letdown after the nice British bitters I’ve tried the last couple of days.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draught at Deep Ellum, numerous occasions, February 2014
Pale yellow, butter colored beer with a small, but moderately well-retained white head. Plentiful carbonation in the bright liquid.
The hops are restrained but crisp and noticeable, adding a touch of earthiness but mostly a strong, herbal spiciness. Honey-like cookie dough maltiness balances the hops well and there is definitely a bit of breadiness. No flaws or alcohol. Medium strength of aroma.
Again, just as with the doppelbock, I’m pretty in love with the house character. A touch musty, even a touch acidic; just a quick nip of sourness ending in a fluffy, sweet pils malt finish that is full of spicy hoppiness and balancing bitterness. Again, like the doppelbock, lower in carbonation, which does allow the maltiness to bog down the palate a bit, as the beer warms and breathes. But a helles has always been a malt-forward style and this works in that regard. And it’s far from too sweet, just more of a nitpick. Lovely. Really happy these are stateside finally.
