COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Boontlinger Weiss has a split personality. Originally brewed solely for the purpose of barrel aging and souring, we tasted the beer before it was to be racked into barrels, we agreed that it had real promise as a Bahl Hornin’ beer. That’s what can be so fun about brewing, sometimes you just decide to go for it and see what would come out. And for the homebrewers out there – this beer is 40% wheat malt and, no, we don’t use rice hulls. Boontlinger Weiss is a light, refreshing wheat beer with a twist: a special belgian yeast adds the complexity and balance that are the hallmark of Anderson Valley Beers. Inspired by German Weisssbier, this light golden ale has hints of tropical fruit and banana, and a cool, clean finish.

Draft at Dutch’s in late July 2012 from notes. Pours a hazy golden color with a medium sized white head. The aroma and flavor have wheat, banana, light tart citrus, mild spices, somewhat creamy for what it is. Not much else going on. Next!

12 ounce bottle into weizen glass, no bottle dating. Pours lightly hazy golden amber color with a nice 1-2 finger white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of lemon, pepper, pear, apple, clove, caramel, bread, wheat, earth, and yeast spiciness. Pretty nice aromas with good strength and balance. Taste of lemon, apple, pear, pepper, wheat, biscuit, caramel, earth, and light yeast spices. Light bready tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of light fruit, wheat, bread, caramel, earth, and light yeast spices on the finish for a short bit. Good balance of flavors, but it is pretty watery. Medium carbonation and ; with a fairly creamy and crisp mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a decent wheat ale. Fair amount of flavors with good balance; very smooth and easy to drink and not offensive. Enjoyable, but I have a feeling this was an old bottle from the taste profile.

On tap. Thick foamy white head, leaving plenty lace. Half-hazy golden color. Very light carbonation, light body, clean more dry finish, creamy texture. Interesting but very light wheat aroma, light belgian spice, a little banana in there. Light sweet, light tart taste. At first, I was thinking, what is wrong with this? But as I went, it seemed more and more right. Pretty light in flavor, but what’s there is good and it’s easy to quaff.

End of the keg at Sugar Maple. Massive creamy white head on top of a filtered looking orange yellow body. Creamy, mellow mouthfeel. Medium bodied, quite creamy, smooth golden malt tones. Hyper sessionable, straightforward beer, not so yeast dominated, some faint banana, more clove, but mostly golden malt. A little watery, but very refreshing.

On tap at Bobby G’s. Pours a clear light light amber with a small white head that has good retention and leaves big streaks of lacing on the glass. Aroma is some bready yeast, clove, pepper, some light floral notes, and biscuit. The taste is a peppery spicyness, clove, some floral notes, and biscuit. The finish is bready yeast with a light bitterness. Quite dry throughout. Light bodied. Heavy carbonation. Good, but not great.

Draft at the Pour House in Westmont, NJ. Pours a slightly cloudy, dark golden yellow color with a one finger white head that slowly fades into a thin ring. Splotches of lacing left behind. Zesty spicy aroma with hints of corriander and peppery cloves along with subtle citrus and some bready yeast. Lots of lemon peel with faint banana. Mostly citrus and spice. Medium bodied with a crisp hop bite and prominent spice character up front that lingers over the sweeter notes into a dry slightly tart finish. Lots of zesty coriander/peppery clove followed by sweet fruit and bready yeast. The yeast character is stronger than the aroma suggests adding fullness to the body and some depth. I’m also picking up more banana than I did in the nose. Still some lemon peel but banana, spice and yeast overpower it a but. Decently balanced and easy to drink but nothing out of the ordinary.

[3922-20110820] Tap. Light banana yeasty wheat notes in the aroma. Clear, orange brown body with quick foamy off-white head. Yeasty wheat flavour has a bit of a plastic straw note. Medium body. Would be a good pairing for French onion soup, I think. (6/3/6/3/11) 2.9
Overheard: "We could have a blue ball party!" "That would be worth it just for the invitations."
