Anderson Valley is famous for its fertile farm land, and it is these farms and their farmers that inspired Mowkeef Saison, our summer installment of the Bahl Hornin’ series. Historically, Saisons were brewed on farms in Belgium, and were designed to refresh farm hands after a long day’s work. We believe Mowkeef Saison is a nice innovation on this traditional style, and will refresh farm hands and pub goers alike. Mowkeef, which means “hay reaper” in our native Boontling, is a Saison with a traditional malt foundation, featuring a medley of malted grains including barley, rye, and oats. Unusually hopped with english noble hops, and spiced with ginger, coriander, and star anise, this straw-colored unfiltered ale is a welcome respite from summer heat, and a perfect fit with Anderson Valley’s lineup of balanced, complex, and authentic

A saison is a really tricky brew, in my opinion. I thought Anderson Valley did a really good job with this one. The funkiness was definitely there in the nose and the taste. It packed a real punch, but saisons often do. A really refreshing brew totally worth trying!

Hazy golden color with a medium sized, white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of honey, lemon, citrus, toast, toffee, spices, and yeast. Taste of citrus, spices, light yeast, lemon, wheat, and a dry finish.

2011-12-03. Very lightly hazy golden yellow body, small white head and lace. 3+ Flavour is a bit odd, grassy hops, fairly bitter, sweet pale malt, odd floral character. Aroma is similar, odd floral, herbal notes. 6+ Smooth average palate. Dry bitter finish lingers. 3+ I didn’t pick up on the spices all that much, I wonder if that means they are mild or just out of reach for me today? Tap at Coles, Buffalo

On tap. Pours with a clear golden hued body with a large and fluffy white head that lasts and leaves good lace. Aromas are quite estery, pear, strong ginger, anise, chamomile, lots of phenol, spicy, dry and grainy. Flavors are of tangerine, fruity esters, peppery phenol, ginger and spicy. Bready malt character and very floral (extra spices added?). Fruity overall. Lively bubbles, dry, delicate, light and drinkable.

On tap @ Toronado SD: Poured a glowing hazy golden yellow hue with a thick inch of foam white head. Aroma is faint with a scent of yeast but nowhere near what I’m used to from a saison. The flavor is spicy with a funky strain that doesn’t taste Belgian like and almost tastes like an artificial imitation strain of yeast. There is a taste of some sugar candy yeast that gives off a bit of a fruity flavor of pear and sour apple, but nothing special to be excited about. It is a heavy on the spice though, and suggests ground clove, coriander, lime leaf, and pepper.

The Anderson Valley Saison is a fine example of a traditional Saison. The aroma had citrus and spicy notes. It is clear and golden with a more spicy flavor than a citrusy taste that went down smooth without any hoppy or bitter finish.

Has a nice balance of yeast and hop spiciness along with a touch of floral. A bit of fruity citrus along with light pepper in the finish. Medium bodied with small bubbles. Interesting and mild saison.

Draft at Taps, Petaluma. Clearish deep gold with huge frothy head. Huge fresh mango, sweet grain of paradise, and dust aroma. Flavors are far less pleasing, consisting a lot of simple, scrapey, powdery stuff on top of a lightly grainy, fruity base. Quite dry, strong carbonation, and obnoxious chalky finish. Not sure the objectionable stuff is the brewery’s fault, since so many of Taps’ servings have had the same grossness, but I’m rating the beer as I taste it.
