Anderson Valley is famous for its fertile farm land, and it is these farms and their farmers that inspired Mowkeef Saison, our summer installment of the Bahl Hornin’ series. Historically, Saisons were brewed on farms in Belgium, and were designed to refresh farm hands after a long day’s work. We believe Mowkeef Saison is a nice innovation on this traditional style, and will refresh farm hands and pub goers alike. Mowkeef, which means “hay reaper” in our native Boontling, is a Saison with a traditional malt foundation, featuring a medley of malted grains including barley, rye, and oats. Unusually hopped with english noble hops, and spiced with ginger, coriander, and star anise, this straw-colored unfiltered ale is a welcome respite from summer heat, and a perfect fit with Anderson Valley’s lineup of balanced, complex, and authentic

UPDATED: FEB 17, 2012 On tap @ Fulton Grand w Erica. Pours medium yellow with big head. Aroma is awesome: nice cutting funk with citrus and yeast. Just potent enough. Palate is surprisingly little citrus with a generous helping of yeast. Great example of the style without relying too much on zest/citrus. Crisp, refreshing, not too astringent.

draft @ redlight redlight. Musty herbal nose with fresh grass aromas. Pours a hazy gold with a thick white head. Herbal citrus flavor upfront with white pepper notes, bread-like malt flavors, with a light citrusy finish. Very refreshing!

On tap at Bling Tiger. Pours bright amber with white head. Tastes of caramel, toffee, pretty darn herbal, spices, and wheat. Pretty enjoyable especially compared with my previous beer.

Draught at Coles, Buffalo. Pours a hazy yellow-gold with a small diminishing frothy white head. Aroma is herbal first followed by light hops, a touch of tart fruit and a hint of spices. Nice flavour, it’s herbal, fruity and lightly hoppy along with some grain and yeast. Average to medium bodied. A lovely beer, great stuff.

A saison is a really tricky brew, in my opinion. I thought Anderson Valley did a really good job with this one. The funkiness was definitely there in the nose and the taste. It packed a real punch, but saisons often do. A really refreshing brew totally worth trying!

Hazy golden color with a medium sized, white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of honey, lemon, citrus, toast, toffee, spices, and yeast. Taste of citrus, spices, light yeast, lemon, wheat, and a dry finish.
