3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Good dark color one would expect for an oatmeal stout
very smooth stout with silky texture. The roasted malts of a stout and slight bitter coffee give way to a vanilla-caramel and maybe nutty taste
A good Oatmeal Stout. I’ll get this one again.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: DEC 20, 2006 Very dark brown, almost black color. This was the first beer I ever had from Anderson Valley Brewing Company years ago and is what got me hooked on their beers. Dark chocolate and roasted coffee aroma and flavor. Nice roasted malt sweetness, dark chocolate that fades to roasted caramel, and not too bitter. Nice full body; creamy on the palate. This is an excellent oatmeal stout with lots of flavor and quite memborable. This is one of my favorite Oatmeal Stouts and I recommend it to people all the time. 12 oz bottle, $3.80 at the Winking Lizard Tavern (Crosswoods).
Sampled again on 11/29/2006 at the November meeting of the Junedale Beer Klub (brought by me)... Tasting notes: This beer seemed a bit dull and unexciting this time around. It had a moderate sweetness, but seemed to be lacking the richness and complexity that is usually there. I wonder if this 6-pack was a bit out of date or something. The original rating (848417) stands for now and I will adjust it, if necessary, in the future depending on how good the next bottle or pint turn out to be...

3.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Coffee and roasted malt on the nose. Perfect dark color with light brown head. Head fades quickly. Coffee tastes with dry malt character. Oatmeal is noticeable and pleasant, but hop bitterness is a little too pronounced. Aftertaste is slightly sour. Mouthfeel lacks some of the silkiness that is desireable for the style.

12oz bottle. Really liked this beer a lot. The aroma was of oatmeal and coffee. The taste was very full of lovely oatmeal and stout flavors.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
This is a beautiful oatmeal stout in every way. I am a fan of the style and a fan of this beer! Thanks froggyfrog for sharing this one.
Appearance: This beer looked black to me with a light chocolate brown head.
Smell: Dark roasty malts, espresso and a hint of chocolate.
Taste: This is what beer is all about. When it enters your mouth and time seems to go in slow motion, like the caramel topping on a commercial takes forever to drip down around the ice-cream, the slow-motion effect happens when a beer is both rich in body and flavor. The burnt caramel, espresso, dark malt, oat flavor drizzled over my tongue in slow motion. This is the sensation that heaven will be like =) This beer is so well balanced with just the perfect hoppy finish I don’t have words to describe.
Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is velvety silky smooth. The texture is what the chocolate looks like when you go on the ride through Hershey’s Chocolate World.
Drinkability: Fat Dog step aside. I’m placing my order for Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout.
Hope this is helpful.

Very overall pleased with this one. The aroma wasn’t as pleasant as the taste-- oatmeal and a nutty chocolate. This ran through the taste as it poured very dark with a tan head, enjoyed the deep chocolate and oatmeal hint. Reads exactly how it tastes.

Bottle. Pours a deep black body with a soapy tan head. The aroma is oat-like with pleasant chocolate notes and nuts. Dry roasted chocolate and nutty smoothness. Finishing with malt bitterness. Tasty yet straightforward.

4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: MAY 11, 2007 Pours black w/ a medium sized, semi creamy froth. Head retention is decent w/ spattered residual lacing. Aroma is weak w/ malted cocoa, roasted coffee and nuts. Medium nectar w/ mellow residual effers. Flavors are thick black coffee, cocoa, w/ just a hint of oatmeal. Very well balanced. Squeaky clean, soft and creamy on the palate. Overall: Robust w/ it’s big roast component yet smooth. Good stuff. Highly recommended.

first thing i noticed when opening this bottle was that it smelled like hops. a pleasant surprise to say the least. i was a little disappointed that it poured a bit thin with a minimal head. on first taste, your tastebuds are drawn in by hops and soothed by a smooth dark chocolate and malt aftertaste that lingers

Bottle: Black with light brown persistent head. It also has a nice layer of lacing all over. Rich malt aromas of chocolate & toffee. This brew tastes like a great candy bar. It has a great finish - thin as expected with oatmeal stouts, a little tang/bitterness and smooth. Yummy.
