Nice black color with oatmeal on the nose. Roasted oatmeal flavor. milewide (609), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA Nov 21, 2007 Almost black color. Medium head and body. Not as sweet as many sweet stouts. Roasted malt aroma and taste. jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA Nov 20, 2007 12 oz. bottle, no freshness date, blurb on the back label, sampled in a pint glass.
Poured a nice looking blackish brown with frothy tan head that slowly settled into a thin lacing of creamy foam. Small amount of ringed laced sticking.
Aromatic stout nose, sweet from the oatmeal, powdery cocoa and fresh light colored morning coffee, not bitter dark roasted coffee, but mildly roasted light coffee.
The smooth mildly roasted coffee flavor continues in the taste with an accompanying dash of vanilla-like cream. Traces of bittersweet chocolate comes out in the middle. The hops are presence through out the taste, sort of an oily flowery citrus. Finishes mildly bitter, a citrus twang that meshes with the roasted malts. Creamy smooth full bodied feel, this stout goes down quite easily.
A tasty and balanced oatmeal stout, well worth trying.
beerbastard (94), Mesa, Arizona, USA Nov 7, 2007 Bottle. Pours black with tan head. Nose was mild. Chewy. Lite sweet followed by bitter chocolate and coffee. NIce balance of bitterness and sweetness. However I would expect a sweet stout to lean more towards the sweet side. I caught a little licorice in the finish. A very good quality beer. mansquito (819), Boston/Philadelphia, USA Nov 4, 2007 Pours with a big dark head and a dark, pretty much black, if not totally black, body. There is a definate sweetness in the smell along with chocolate and roasted wonders. Sweet syrupy taste to it with a roasted coffee touch along with a hint of chocolate. Grains noticable as well. Rather good and easy and enjoyable to drink. JK (2946), Richfield, Minnesota, USA Oct 28, 2007 Moderate malt and some of it is lightly roasted. Black with a medium palate. I didn’t get anything that makes me think of a sweet stout, but there is some oatmeal. xnoxhatex (1305), Grand Rapids/Chicago, Michigan, USA Oct 28, 2007 12 oz bottle at Quenchers, Chicago. Opaque black with nice, large tan head. Aroma is overwhelming (but nice) roasted malt with chocolate. Flavor is all roasted malt that is somewhat chocolately as well. Med to full body. Very nice from anderson valley.
