TheBeerLover (1019), DC Metro Area, USA Feb 2, 2006 Excellent oatmeal stout, with lots of big aromas and flavors, on a very creamy body. Pours to a beautiful, deep ebony color, with a thick and creamy tan head, and a moderate amount of carbonation. The nose is excellent, with lots of good dark chocolate, coffee, and roasty aromas, paired with some piney hop aroma. Palate if firm, with lots of good, dark chocolate, coffee, and roasty flavors. Mouth feel is silky and creamy. This beer finishes with more good dark chocolate and roast, then ends dry and bitter, with flavors of pine tar that lingers. Excellent beer to match with shell fish, such as oysters on the half shell, or hearty fare, and rich and sweet chocolate deserts. mkgrenwel (420), Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA Jan 30, 2006 Sweet at first with a chocolate foundation. Then, transitions into a dry, bitter, roasted barley flavor. Good bit of roasted grain bitternessl .Light hopping keeps the sweetness balanced very well. Lots of barley and oat flavor without being grainy. Actually a rather wet mouthfeel, but never thin. Bittersweet is the perfect way to describe it, like bakers chocolate.
thegreenrooster (1811), St.louis, Missouri, USA Jan 28, 2006 Pour is a very dark black with a small white head. Aroma is coffee malts and chocolate. Flavor is heavy and strong with notes of chocolate and caramel. Very tasty and strong brew. This brewer can do no wrong! GG (1612), NorCal, California, USA Jan 27, 2006 A midnight-black appearance with a nice, thick off-white/grey head. Aroma was bittersweet chocolate of course, but I thought it lacked compared to the truly great oatmeal stouts. It just didn’t have that incredible aroma Young’s has or Samuel Smith’s. I thought the flavor was strong on the bitter chocolate side, which was good but there wasn’t much in the oatmeal side. I thought it wasn’t very complex and let it warm a bit with hoping more flavor would shine thru. Much to my displeasure, it didn’t. Minimal hop finish. I would have to rate this as a nice stout, but nothing extraordinary. 99lashes (3), salt lake city, Utah, USA does not count Jan 23, 2006 aroma is a somewhat subdued. a bit malty. dark pour with nice dark tan head. dissipated quickly. tastes chocolatey with caramel and bittersweet highlights. fills your mouth like a good piece of chocolate melting on you tongue. definitely a huge value vs. price beer. trokini (1027), San Diego, California, USA Jan 18, 2006 I heard from others that this was an excellent oatmeal stout, and they were right. Dark brown pour with a small, thick tan head. Aroma is semisweet chocolate and oatmeal, with some toasted malts. The taste is very smooth, with a creamy mouthfeel. Lots of caramel, some chocolate, and full of oats and malt. Definitely will finds its way into my fridge again. paulmetzger (152), Pocatello, Idaho, USA Jan 15, 2006 Aroma: little caramel, little licorice.
Appearance: Opaque, almost black. Little head.
Flavor: Chocolate bitterness combined with a sweet toasty flavor
Palate: Smooth, low carbonation but just enough to give a bite at the end.
This is my third review of a beer from Anderson Valley ("Boonville Beer") and they are quickly becoming a favorite brand. GregClow (2493), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jan 2, 2006 Bottle from Premier Gourmet, Buffalo. Dark ruby-brown with a thin tan head that leaves some light lacing. Aroma of dark chocolate and slightly burnt caramel. Nice mouthfeel, slightly creamy. Flavour is initially as expected - sweet, roasty, notes of chocolate & coffee - but it develops an interesting smoky/burnt/earthy quality in the finish that I found surprising and enjoyable. An interesting take on the style.
