ryan (1774), Beltsville, Maryland, USA Nov 3, 2005 Pours black with a tan head that fades to a cover. Some lacing. Aroma is roasted and sweet, fair amount of chocolate. Flavor is light and sweet, chocolate with a slightly roasted, bitter finish. Texture is slightly watery. mrnutsnbolts (204), Berkeley, California, USA Oct 31, 2005 Big stout. Chocolaty, creamy, smooth on the palate. Very satisfying. Smells like coffee, semisweet chocolate, and roasted malts. Nice flavor. lethe (168), Stony Brook by way of Cincinnati, New York, USA Oct 27, 2005 Pours stout opaque and offers a sticky sweet scent. Palate is full-bodied and even-keeled. Flavor is strongly sweet at first, followed by an oatmeal dryness, and concluded with a light hoppy bitterness. This careful balance of flavors is what makes this stout exceptional in an unassuming way. dwyerpg (2519), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Oct 24, 2005 Okay, I love stouts and oatmeal. This may be even better than the version offered by Samuel Smiths. Full, rich, and satisfying - and really not too sweet. Grandpa (325), Verona, New York, USA Oct 18, 2005 A good looking stout; tight, light tan head made up of small bubbles sitting on top of an opaque, black brew. Strong roasted malt flavor with overtones of coffee and chocolate. Slightly sweet, in character with an oatmeal, followed by a pleasant hoppy bitterness. The second swallow seemed to be a bit thin, lacking in body. It didn’t have the lip-licking smack of a great stout mantis7 (4), Santa Rosa, California, USA does not count Oct 14, 2005 I have never tasted a better beer, let alone a better stout. Thick clean tasting with a good head. The only possible way to get a better beer (if you like stouts) than this is to go there in person to Booneville, CA and have one from a keg....Bottom Line: If you love stout beer - you will love this. I would also recomend this beer for someone who is just starting to enjoy different kinds of beers. I gave one of these to my girlfriend who is 23 and "doesn’t like beer" and she loved it!
BTW anderson valley brewery has won many awards including "top 10 brewerys in the US" and this beer (Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout) has won numerous gold / silver bronze medals world wide against WORLD CLASS stouts. It truly is one of the best stouts in the world. And its my favorite! DrBayern (1135), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Oct 12, 2005 I really like this stout, and have been drinking it for several years. Pours dark brown with a rich tan head. malty sweetness but not syrupy feeling. A bit hoppier and drier in the finish with a slight hop bitterness not usually seen in sweet stouts. blankboy (3165), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 9, 2005 Bottle. Pours dark brown, almost black, with an average size light-brown head. Aroma of hops, milk chocolate, coffee and roasted malt. Flavour follows the aroma but is a little tame, it needs more chocolate and/or coffee -- the hops are a nice touch though. Medium bodied and creamy. Very enjoyable, I’ve been impressed with all of the Anderson Valley beers I’ve had so far.
