HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Sep 3, 2005 Bottle (12oz). Poured lively dark brown-black with a big foamy-creamy-rocky light brown head. Lots of dark roast/burned malt, bitter chocolate, resin, coffee, celery (yes! - thanks, jerc), moss and chestnuts. Taste starts creamy-chocolate, then an odd camphor note creeps in, then the hops and the bitter chocolate coffee distracts you, then the chocolate seems a bit sweet, then salt, then some sour cherry and grape seed - this has a lot happenin’! Mouthfeel is medium to medium-light bodied, bitter and a bit creamy-sticky. Very nice - overall a touch sweeter than ideal, but recommended - very drinkable, not at all heavy. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA Aug 28, 2005 12 oz bottle. Poured the darkest of dark with a decent head. But the head didn’t last long. Aromas were sweet and roasty. Flavors were some coffee, other roasted malts, and a nice bitter hops finish. Pretty tasty, OhioDad (2491), Hilliard, Ohio, USA Aug 11, 2005 12 oz bottle - Pours black with a creamy tan head that lingers at about an 8th of an inch and laces well. Aromas of chocolate, caramel, roasted nuts. Flavor of sweet chocolate, oatmeal, caramel all finished with some bitter hops. Very sweet and quite decadant. Palate is just right. Mouthcoating and creamy yet very drinkable. This is a very underrated stout. I really enjoyed this. A very nice oatmeal stout. stegosaurus (1882), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 11, 2005 Updated: Mar 15, 2007pours dark with a small tan head, aroma of chocolate, coffee, roasted and sweet malts. flavor, coffee-like, chocolate, roast, with some bitter hops in the finish, not a bad brew. sirphobos (32), 29 Palms, California, USA Aug 7, 2005 big change of pace from what i usually drink wich is beers that would kill you if you drank a 6 pack. i love the way a beer looks when you cant see through it hence the 5 on apperance. one beer i could definatly drink on a reagular basis and still be able to enjoy food afterwards. Holdwine (905), Beertimore, Maryland, USA Aug 1, 2005 It is so bloody hot, yet I desire multiple oatmeal stouts! Glad I tried this one. Well done from a pitch black oil pour to the bittersweet odor of coffee and chocolate. Nice sweet maltiness on the tomgue. Semi-sweet Chocolate finish. I thoroughly did not enjoy this beer. It had a great deep dark color and rich caramel-colored head, but that was as good as it got. Each sip conveyed strong coffee overtones and each one tasted as if the coffee beans were badly burnt... by the surface of the sun. For an oatmeal stout and a sweet stout, I was expecting some subtle hints of sweetness. The ’subtle hints’, however, turned out to be sour punches of bitterness that lingered to an aftertaste as refreshing as an ashtray. A slightly bitter ashtray.
On a final note, the previous reviewer described this beer’s "tapestry of flavor", and I can entirely relate because it certainly tasted no better than an area rug that hasn’t been vacuumed in a while. AlchemistZ (493), Richmond, Virginia, USA Aug 1, 2005 Jet black in appearance with a brown head that unfortunately collapses quite quickly. Malt sugar sweetened black malt and nutty oats dominate the aroma with just a hint of ale yeast fruit. There is also an incredible, sweetened, carmelized milk aroma as well. WOW, what a tapestry of flavor. The aroma only hinted at what I found on the palate. All aroma components are in the flavor with a body that is solid (but not overdone), grainy, and silky from the oats. This, and just the right bitterness, allows for drinkability and balance. I think this is almost perfect.
