With its deep, dark brown-black color, thick, full-bodied, velvety-smooth mouth feel, mocha character, and, strong yet subtle hop bite, Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout is one of the thickest, richest, and most complex stouts on the market today.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a very dark ruby color. There’s a nice two finger head with a khaki shade that caps the body off nicely. Retention is good, texture is great, and plenty of lacing is left behind. This one looks damn good. S: This is what I’d want a solid oatmeal stout to smell like: decent chocolate notes, plenty of roast, and oatmeal to tie everything together. No twists or turns, just a really good aroma. T: It starts with a bit of cola flavor. The finish, though, is excellent: it’s chocolaty, roasty, and bitter in all the right ways. While simplistic, it really makes good use of what it has to deliver an enjoyable experience. M: Yes, this is rather thin in body. The rich flavor means this is still a good one to savor. But man...if it had a full body, that would really take it over the top. I still enjoy how creamy it is in the mouth, and there’s only enough carbonation to help it go down well. O: Oh yeah, now this is the stuff. It’s not perfect, but it’s damn enjoyable - it would be in the 4+ range if it weren’t so thin or overly cola-flavored. I would definitely buy this again.

35.5cl bottle at home. Appearance is black, clear, brown head that does not really last. Aroma is dark fruit, toast, chocolate. Taste is medium sweet, medium bitter. Palate: medium to full body, creamy, soft carbonation, long bittersweet finish. Overall a very smooth and well-made stout, especially regarding the low ABV.

Pours very dark with a light tan head. Flavours are quite subtle compared to some stouts of this strength. Toffee malty, roasty milk flavours but overall quite mellow and a bit thin.

Oil dark, brown head. A: rye, overripe prunes, brown sugar, faint hairspray note. Oily sensation, good balance. T: sweet, chocolaty, oily. Starts with chocolate, faint rye note, very faint fruity note, mostly cherry. Develops towards a relatively fruity bitterness with strong wood note. Aftertaste is sweet and dry, peanut butter, rye. Smooth, tasty, well balanced: Great for this low abv.

Bottle at Vesta in Redwood City, CA. Light cocoa, roasted malts. Perhaps I’ve been hanging with some pretty rich Stouts / Dark Stuff lately but this seemed underwhelming and mellow.

Kleur zwart met lichte crèmekleurige laag schuim. Aroma van havermout en gist. Smaak idem dito. Subtiele smaak, weinig bitter en zoet, maar juist zacht. Lichte gebrande smaak.

0.355 l bottle from local Albert Heijn, best before 15/3/2016. Clear, very dark, almost opaque, brownish red to black with a medium large, creamy, quickly diminishing, brown head. Sweetish-malty aroma of raisins, nuts, toffee, milk chocolate and vanilla. Sweetish-malty taste of milk chocolate, nuts, vanilla and some coffee, followed by a short, slightly bitter, roasty finish. Medium to full body, creamy and smooth mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Very tasty, rather full-bodied for such a low abv. Not too deep of course but very harmonic and nicely balanced. Like it!
