We did a blind taste test between this beer and 4 other amber ales to objectively determine which one was best. The beers were Full Sail Amber, Anderson Valley Boont Amber Ale, New Belgium Fat Tire, Lost Coast Alleycat, and Alaskan Amber. You can watch the video here to see who won: http://youtu.be/RaXcBiJExus

355 ml bottle. Pours dark copper brown with an off-white head. Intense aroma of flowers and fruits (litchi and hints of citric fruits) and a little yeasty. Medium to full body with lively carbonation. The taste starts with roasted malts (caramel) but not too sweet with some fruity acids and alcoholic. Very well balanced with a smooth bitterness in the ending.

12 oz. can from Co-Op Liquor Store, served in a nonic pint. Pours a hazy orangey-amber with fine suspended particulate, low and slow carbonation, and a thin, light tan head that leaves lace spots. Sweet, bready, toasted malts and hops that impart the aroma of Juicy Fruit gum, along with herbal and vinous hints, greet the nose; on the tongue, the maltiness parts somewhat for grapey, red winey flavors to take center stage. There’s an unfortunate sourness and an odd alcohol tang to the sip as well, which lingers for longer than desired. Slightly thick and a little silky. The wine-like elements pull this beer towards the fruity side and out-of-balance with the malt for an amber ale. Even with this, and with the presence of sour grapes, it’s still an enjoyable brew.

I do not wax on poetically about beer but I do know the quality of a beer once tasted. This review is not about my tastes but reinforces the numbers, which are arbitrary.

Pours clear amber with a beige head. Aroma is sweet caramel malts, almost cough syrup. Taste is sickly sweet, it almost felt like I was having a pepsi. Light roast, really not my thing.

DATE: April 21, 2016... OCCASION: a tiresome day ends in an old friend... GLASSWARE: Brew at the Zoo pint... APPEARANCE:thick, frothy, off-white head captures the vision first.. the effervescent, copper body is also impressive to look at... the lacing resembles camo, with zigzagging angles of entanglement... AROMA: caramel is up front and center, with subtle nut and soft hops... some bread and toasted malts make for an alluring aroma... PALATE: creamy, smooth, lightly hopped and pleasantly lingering... impressively sessionable... TASTE: tough to detect a dominant flavor here... the caramel is appreciable, with the sweet malts lightening the taste...some fruitiness--apple, pear--are present... OVERALL: I haven’t seen Anderson Valley offered locally for years, and then, lo and behold, I found this six at Hope... just as I remembered it: smooth, sweet, and sessionable... a beer that suits many occasions and rewards with just enough flavor... all that is right with the American amber genre...

From a large bottle, pours with a medium head, minor lacing. Beautiful dark Amber ale, nice on the tongue. Definitely above average, nice for Friday afternoon relaxing. Worthy of your time and money.
