COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed at the Anderson Valley Brewing Company by David Keene, the owner of the legendary San Francisco beer-bar, Toronado, this double-style ale features the huge fruit flavors combined with yeastiness and spiciness that Belgian ales are known for.

Pours a clear garnett color with a full light tan head. Aroma is dark fruit and a pleasant sourness. Taste is sweet roasted malt, licorice, plums and spices. Interesting. A little busy, but certainly well balanced. Alcohol warmth evident after the swallow.

Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of caramel, nutty and a hint of milk chocolate, moderate cooked orange for the hops, moderate dough for the yeast with raisin, toffee, brown sugar and nutmeg. Head is small, fizzy, light tan with no lacing and is fully diminishing. Flavor starts moderately to heavily sweet, and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and acidic and only faintly bitter. Palate is medium, a little slick with a soft carbonation. Nice and smooth aspects to this Abbey Dubbel which makes it both savory and easy drinking.

pours hazelnut brown with minimal head, ringed retention, show moving lacing, super micro CO2, scattered slow moving CO2 streams. Dark malty nose with a bit of scotch. Strong brown sugar up front, 7/10 sweetness, mixed with deep malts and an ethyl alcohol backdrop. Slightly dark fruity. Silky carbonation and buttery mouthfeel. Low-medium complexity, med-high depth, excellent carry, medium-long length, decent carry. Potent high ABV beer, but not complex enough for me to try again.

22oz bottle in a shaker. Pours brown with lacy, light beige head. Aroma of spicy yeast, brown sugar, some caramel malts, and some floral hops. Flavor about the same. Average texture. A good beer.

Clear dark ruby, with an unlasting head. Nice malty aroma with a touch of booziness, burnt caramel, and some eccentric Belgian yeastiness. Taste is full and big, with some big yeasty fruit esters, some soy sauce, earthy chewy sweet malts, burnt caramel, and some more boozy esters, though not much heat. Nice warming tones of cherry and fig, but lots of earthyness.

Appearance: browns – soft leather and old shoes. Khaki head fades fast into a collar of bubbles and foam. Lingers as a patch of film, swirling with a lingering bready blanket.
Nose: spice, raisins, and dried plums. Pumpernickel raisin bread. Plum skins, red grape skins. Musk, apple seeds, and pomace for some nice dry tannins. Saddle bags.
Palate: interesting. Dark fruits grab the middle – prunes, figs, dates. Hint of licorice root, treacle. Brown sugar and cinnamon. Maraschino cherries and pineapple. Brown breads – pumpernickel and raisin especially. Grows sweeter as it warms up – almost saccharine.
Final Thoughts: a bit scattered and messy. Okay but not really together for a respectable double/dubbel. I’ve tasted better from Anderson Valley.

Bottle shared at the 6th annual Richmond Industry Gathering, 11/27/11. Pours a clear amber color with a thin frothy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of brown sugar, citrus hops and a leafy finish. The taste is toffee, brown sugar and a bitter hop finish. Medium bodied.

This beer was excellent. It was so good I practically drank the whole thing before I rated it. Spicy, caramel, toasty, rich, smooth, perfect. I was going to rate this lower and then I asked myself where does this beer not measure up? It’s awesome and I will make it a regular. If I had to give it a knock I would say that It would be more appealing cloudy in appearance like Chimay.
