3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Ernest (5182) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JUL 29, 2004
UPDATED: DEC 22, 2006 Head is initially small, frothy/fizzy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is medium brown. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, cookie), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of banana/gum, toffee, brown sugar, and clove. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lighty acidic, moderately bitter. Medium
to full body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. A bit uncomfortably syrupy-sweet in the mouth, but the aroma is decent enough. Certainly much better than the tripel.

UPDATED: MAR 27, 2005 In a 22oz bottle from John’s Market. Pours a dark dark red, looks black without holding it up to the light, but has an amazing red glow when up to the light. Small ivory head that falls fast. Sweet spicy aroma with lots of banana smell to it. Taste starts sweet and with tons of dark fruit, wheat and caramel, with a good balance and lots of spice in the finish. Another rockin anderson valley brew.

Bright brown hue. Sweet banana nose. Very smooth body; rather thickish. Big notes of chocolate, caramel, and maple syrup. Very tasty, but it had a heavy sweetness factor.

Bottle pours brown with deep red highlights, small off-white milk froth like head, soft carbonation, with so-so lacing. Aroma is of roasted malts, slight dark pitted fruit, and light alcohol. Candied fruit, figs, dates, and raisins on the front. Slightly sweet, finishing dark and roasty. Good mouthfeel, nice body, lingering finish but slight alcohol dominance as it warms. Anyways, probably one of the better American made Dubbels I’ve had. Don’t pass up on this one if given the chance. Thanks goes out to batkins for the trade!
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 bb (4888) - Alamo, California, USA - JUL 4, 2004
Bottle. Brown, slightly reddish, beer with a quickly dissapearing beige-head. Sweet malt aroma that’s got some yeast and slight fruitiness to it. The flavor is complex - sweet malt, fruit, yeast, and more, but the trend is toward a slightly swete aftertaste that doesn’t quite pull the beer off. It’s a shame... if they could cut down on the sweet finish, it’d be a better beer.

On draught at Toronado. 05.22.04 Pours a dark brown, halo of a head, minimal lacing. Aroma of fruit-stand, taffy, Belgian yeasties. Flavors of smoke, banana, bubblegum, canteloupe. Dry, biting finish. Sour and surprising, but most tasty. Long and lingering flavors. Nothing like any dubbel I recall having tasted before.
