jasonp (1504), Sterling/Dulles, Virginia, USA Dec 17, 2004 Pours dark brown with a VOLCANIC light brown head, took approx 5-10 minutes for it to settle and pour the rest. Aroma of roasted malt, mocha and some hops. Taste has the aroma qualities plus notes of chocolate, coffee and some wood. Slightly burnt/bitter aftertaste. The mouthfeel kind of ruined this beer for me: ridiculously prickly and over-carbonated, like a bottle of pepsi. The body was a tad thin too. Pailhead (2572), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Nov 12, 2004 Bottle: The aroma pours out of the bottle as soon as you remove the cap. Malty, fruity, anc cookie aroma. First time I’ve ever understood what someone said when they mentioned cookie aromas. Pours dark brown, virtually black, with a nice tan head with fair retention. Flavor is a malty coffee with something else I can’t pinpoint. Chocolate flavor. Light cookie flavor to go with the smell and maybe some light wine. A little watery. A different kind of porter, but good. MilkmanDan (1940), Eagan, Minnesota, USA Nov 3, 2004 Dark brown with a creamy mocha head. Nose malty and roasty, some maple syrup and molasses, plums as well. Flavor is a bit smoky, some nicotine, decent roasts. A mite too sweet, finish is a bit short as well. Still, rather drinkable, decent stuff. Add some more bitterness at the end it’d be much better. HighGravity (890), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Oct 27, 2004 Wow, this beer has such an incredible head and lace. As for the nose it is full of milk chocolate, hazelnut, and a touch of hop. The beer is dark with red highlights when held up to the light. The palate is smooth, creamy, and rich in both coffee and dark chocolate. I like a beer with a long strong finish and unfortunately this is the area were this beer falls a little too short. However, the sum of the parts make for a very good Porter. JCW (1262), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Oct 23, 2004 I don’t know what was missing here for me, but something was. Dark brown color, with medium tan head both perfect for the style. Aroma was a pleasant mix of a C hop and chocolate and slight carmel. Flavor was fairly hoppy. Sounds good up till now. Body was thin, yes I know this isn’t a stout or anything, but the flavors seemed diluted. Dry finish. DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA Oct 7, 2004 (22 oz bottle, $4) Decent porter with a strongly roasted maltiness that imparts a moderate bitterness; Mild sweetness hints from the background early on, but the finish is pretty dry, with the dark roasted, almost ash-like flavor being totally dominant; A yeasty flavor has presence from start to finish; The nose is hoppy and quite yeasty with some roasted aromas behind the yeastiness; Full bodied and well carbonated palate; Dark brown in color with a ruddy translucency; Medium tan head shows solid retention; A fair amount of patchy lacing is left on the glass jefcon (997), Arlington, Virginia, USA Sep 16, 2004 Updated: Feb 9, 2008Small head diminishes except for some low islands atop a glass of this cloudy, muddy, flat black porter. Burnt meal, chocolate, buttery and charcoal aromas all made this beer smell like a bakery burned down. The flavors were better, with some caramel sweetness coming through. Full, creamy texture, as a porter should, but a little flat. Revised 2/08 - much better bottle with a good spicy hop presence and a great finish. motelpogo (4394), Plzen, Czech Republic Sep 7, 2004 bottled. had a nice tasting session sitting back in the redwoods. darkish brown. aroma of cocoa powder and cake dough. hint of treacle, burnt toast, nice, uncomplicated porter
