3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dark, almost black with a thin white head. Aroma is slightly musty with hints of chocolate. Flavor is a slight chocolate, notes of roasted malt while not being big and full. Nice dark lager, kind of like a upscale Negro Modelo, it could be good with spicy food as a counter to heat without being heavy. Not bad, nice little session beer.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Rich maltiness had lots going on: a slight toffee-like sweetness, chewy grains, tobacco, cereal, multi-grain toast and bread crust. A complementing amount of bitterness followed, leaving behind a drying finish. Nice beer.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours a clear dark amber body with a small foamy beige head that faded to a thin film. The nose is rather sweet with a lot of toasted and slightly husky caramel malt. The flavor is pretty thin and very grainy with a huskiness on the finish. This doesn’t come across as very smooth or well lagered at all. Some burnt caramel and cereal grain on the finish. Minimal hoppiness. Light bodied and thin with fizzy prickly carbonation. This was a bit of a disappointment for me, I expect better beer from Anderson Valley.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Batch 1 draught and onwards as recently as 2013
Caramel-colored body has some brighter orange tints to it and shows a very high clarity and a small, wispy light beige head that shows fairly strong retention.
Sweet malts and just a hint of coffee-like roastiness are fairly strong in the nose, with just a kiss of spicy hops. Very clean with some corn notes that are clearly intended (not DMS or anything).
The flavor is what really shines in this one, however. glassy-smooth malt texture allows the sweet malt to slide through the mouth, richly extracted but tempered by the toasty/roasty dark wheat notes and finishing with some corn-like flavors that are enjoyable (if you like that sort of thing). Spicy, herbaceous hops show very little bitterness but quite more flavor than they let on from the aroma. Very drinkable, and after the first few sips, it seems like it may get too sweet over the course of the glass, but it never really does.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a deep rich clear brown with a nice light tan head that laces the glass well after the head has subsided. Aroma of rich caramel along with open out BBQ. Taste is sweet up front with a change to chocolate bitterness around mid palate that then slowly fades into a bready syrup like flavor.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
This beer is a very interesting take on dark lager. I think this is the first time I've experienced corn being involved as an intentional addition to the flavor and not as a cost-saving adjunct. Poured from the can, this beer offers a sweet fruity aroma and a murky ruby color, with tan khaki head. Features a variety of fruity hop and yeast flavors, along with toasted malts, some dark chocolate. Complex, but a bit jumbled flavor profile overall. Definitely an original concept, but the execution of this clever idea was a little messy. Smooth, but oily finish on the palate struck me a bit off-putting.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Type: 16-oz. can
Glass: Manzanita pint glass
From: Bine & Vine Bottle Shop in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: Jan. 29, 2014
Consumed: Jan. 31, 2014
Poured a caramel reddish semi-clear color with two fingers of frothy khaki tan head. Semi-circular lacing along the sides with some sporadic spots. Great retention on the top all the way down.
Smelled dark lager notes. Got boozy corn, hay, cereal, bread, nuts, toffee, slight chocolate, light caramel and honey.
Initial taste was much darker than the smell. Got dark chocolate, roasted nuts, toffee and caramel, mixed with grass, hay, corn and cereal. A bit earthy and gritty.
Medium body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Lively-to-fizzy carbonation. Abrupt finish.
Not too bad, but nothing extraordinary about this one.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
A couple shades away from total darkness with a rocky, medium size head and good lacing. Aroma of corn and toasted grains with some caramel in the background. Woodsy, nutty notes precede the modestly sweet flavor that end with more caramel in the aftertaste. Medium to light bodied, decently carbonated mouthfeel. Average length finish.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Metallic aroma with roast and hay, pilsner sulfur notes
Pours a brown light black color with big fluffy creamy off white head
Tinny flavor with roast and pilsner hay like malt noble hop
Medium light bodied medium co2, lingering metallic taste
Tinny can really came through on this. Quite disappointed. Probabaly pretty decent beer on tap. Had other craft beer from cans and haven't had this issue.

Good for what it is... Is a nice brew that you could drink a lot of. Not going to knock your socks off... Nice flavors, nose is very sweet, thin palate. Good brew to pair with dinner.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
From a big pounder can this stuff is good. Has many of the good attributes of dark lager, Schwartz, mild stout and dunkel rolled into one. Nifty mild roasty flavors. Small metallic hints, but still yummy. Very enjoyable for a lager lover who likes dark beers but not impy stout. Pleasant overall beer experience. Good job AV. Yes, pretty good stuff, easy to like.
