Robust. Brewed with a “heelch” (that means “a lot” in Boontling) of Columbus, Chinook, and Cascade hops, our double IPA has a palate pleasing bitterness that is artfully balanced with a full-bodied malt foundation. With a deep color of polished brass and a nose that sings of pink grapefruit and redwood needles, the rich biscuit-like malt flavors are intertwined with hints of vanilla, mangoes, and peppercorns leading to a deep, warming finish.

650 ml bottle. Pours a nice new penny copper color with a medium white head that has good retention. The aroma is somewhat indistinct with a bit of oxidized pine. The taste is dominated by caramel and toffee with bits of bitter pine appearing randomly and in varying degree throughout the tasting. The palate was full and silky smooth and the carbonation was lively. Finished long and dry and left a cloying sweet caramel aftertaste. Overall: Perhaps I got an old bottle as this was just a mess. But I paid good money for it so i’m gonna rate it. The brewer might want to consider dating his bottles so there is no doubt whether or not we are drinking fresh or old stock.

Appearance: orange, maybe even amber. From the first smell you can feel citrus and resin. It’s quite heavy and full. Quite bitter as the double IPA should be. Very good but definitely it’s not a session bear.

9/03/2013: Anderson Valley Heelch O’ Hops... Aroma: Sugary, ripe citrus, biscuit, Hawaiian bread crust, hint of pine. Appearance: Hazy, deep burnished gold color; nice ,fluffy ivory-colored head that lasts. Flavor: Ripen citrus hop flavor up front, bitteresweet middle as the toffee maltiness comes through along with some biscuit, aggressive resin bitterness in the finish; strong, but not overbearing alcohol that’s mostly hidden. Palate: Medium-full body, smooth; feels dense. Overall: Seems to be best when served colder than usual. 12 fl. oz. bottle (8.7% Alc. by Vol.) from Jungle Jim’s International Market in Fairfield, Ohio. Rating #246 for this beer.
