COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Robust. Brewed with a “heelch” (that means “a lot” in Boontling) of Columbus, Chinook, and Cascade hops, our double IPA has a palate pleasing bitterness that is artfully balanced with a full-bodied malt foundation. With a deep color of polished brass and a nose that sings of pink grapefruit and redwood needles, the rich biscuit-like malt flavors are intertwined with hints of vanilla, mangoes, and peppercorns leading to a deep, warming finish.

MALTS:
Pale Two-Row, Victory

HOPS:
Columbus, Chinook, Cascade

On tap at Garricks Head, Victoria, BC. Pours clear amber with thick white head, very attractive. Columbus is strong here and the nose is quite dank and pine resinous, the latter stretching into the flavour, which balances out the hop bitterness making it less aggressive... the way a DIPA should be. Very fresh grapefruit as well. Lovely stuff.

A vigorous pour into my New Belgium globe glass produces a two-finger thick, pale tan colored head. The beer is a light amber color that shows a brilliantly clear, dark copper color. The beer has a woody, dry saw dust character, bright citrus fruit character, lychee notes, and a big floral / fruity character that becomes quite a bit more pronounced as the beer warms up. The citrus character is the dominant not here, but it is really well supported by the bright tropical fruit notes and the subtler herbal / spicy hop notes. The malt plays a distant role in the aroma, if you really dig for it, there is barely a suggestion of whole grain crackers.

The beer has a biting, herbal bitterness to it, with a soft creamy texture that is offset a bit by a prickly carbonation that accentuates the peppery side of the hop character. The peppery, herbal character really lingers in the finish here. Up front it is balanced well by a citrus leaning fruitiness that is quite bright and has supporting notes of lychee, some floral citrus notes, and perhaps a hint of guava. The body is fairly light, definitely on the quaffable side of the spectrum, but does have some chewiness to it. The malt character is definitely supporting here, but provides soft flavors of whole grain crackers, and a soft bready, pale malt character that works quite well with the dominant hop character.

Quite a nice Double IPA, I like that the beer is quite quaffable, and the expressive hop character definitely hits the spot for hop heads. This gets better as it warms up, or maybe my palate recovers from the Rampant that I just had, either way, I like the fruit focus (in this case citrus) that this takes on with time.
