grant (760), Martinez, California, USA Dec 16, 2003 Updated: Dec 28, 2003 I put off buying this baby for a long time (like so many other beers--I need to start drinking more again!) because of the ugly juxtaposition of the gaudy metallic purple and mountains on the label. Whoops! Hazy darkish amber, with almost BMC-esque legless head. Oh well. But the nose is just fabulous! Sweet, chocolate-cookie dough and sweet potato malts intertwine with a serpentine-bounded canvas of hop aromas: flowers, orange, bay leaf. Flavor is big and malty and of course bitter up front, although the drum roll dies off a bit, leaving a wan, self-conscious string of apologetic, festering variegated bitterness. A slow warming effect builds from the alcohol and unmasked hop compounds. Nice!
Note (12/28/03): This rating is for the bomber (22 oz) version. There is ostensibly no difference between this and the 12 oz. verson, in reality there is. The 12 oz. version consistently earns a low 3's rating from my palate, and the bomber stands as it is.
zappafan99 (319), Rock Hill, South Carolina, USA Sep 3, 2008 Taste 9/8 bottle(date?) Looks:Amber/copper with nice clingy foam Aroma:Mix of various hops and some nice sweet malt. Floral, soapy, pine. Taste:Medium bodied, full range of hops . Good malt balance. Not alcoholic. Quite good. arondee (64), USA Aug 24, 2008 Poured a tan/orange color with a fluffy white head. Honey malt, and floral scents in the aroma. It’s bitter but not overly. Better than most IPA’s but it might be a little bitter for some people. DuffMan (1942), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Aug 24, 2008 Clear orange amber, orange-kissed puffy head. resinus hop aroma, citrus oils, sweet. sweet caramel malt platform with a mostly resinous, but also fruity hop character. Finish is long and bitter. 1010 (21), Marysville, Ohio, USA Aug 23, 2008 Pours a light tan color with a small white head. Has a hoppy aroma and taste, but not many layers. Would probably pass this up for other IPAs mabel (1633), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 21, 2008 [1605-20080816] 355mL bottle. Aroma has a bit of citrus sweet lemon peel.
