Complexity. Aged for three months in Wild Turkey Bourbon barrels, this luxurious stout has a deep ebony hue and a beautiful mahogany head. The woody, vanilla-like notes imparted by the barrels mingle with aromas of fresh baked bread, toffee, and espresso and envelop the rich chocolate and roasted barley flavors with a fine bourbon character. Our exclusive partnership with Wild Turkey gives Anderson Valley a world class, consistent source of barrelage, allowing our brewers to explore new frontiers in barrel-aged craft beer.

Bottle. Pours perfectly dark, a beautiful head of foam with reddish, kind of caffe latte notes. Very good appearance. Aroma is not intense but very enjoyable and fresh with coffee and toffee notes. Extremely well-balanced and smooth taste build of fresh coffee, creamy vanilla, brown sugar and indeed, a bourbon feeling! A sweet tone is well countered with a bittereness. Leaves a very pleasant sweet aftertaste, sort of coffee-style. This beer is extremely drinkable, I actually could start my day with a glass of this one!

Normally, lower gravity spirit barrel aged beers are pretty much garbage but I think Anderson Valley did a really great job w/ this one. It maybe tastes more like a bourbon cocktail or some sort than it does a regular beer but it does at least taste good w/o being harshly acloholic, over-sweet or old and cardboardy tasting, thus making it better than nearly all of the top rated spirit barrel stouts on RateBeer. It is a nice looking beer too, deep brown w/ a fine-bubbled and long-lasting off-white head. It smells like vanilla, cherry and coffee and tastes about the same. This is nice and dry and every bit as drinkable as any old stout you might find on the shelf--and actually quite a lot more drinkable than most--but it has a deep, rich bourbon barrel character. While that character may dominate just a bit, it does not completely overwhelm the base stout, which adds nice fresh roast coffee notes and a bit of chocolate to compliment it. I honestly started in writing a negative review of this stuff just not expecting much giving my past experiences w/ similar beers but this is really impressive and well done. If you want to be smacked over the head w/ booze and sweetness, you may wish to scroll past this one. If you want an interesting and full flavored barrel aged beer w/o having to split one bottle between twenty of your best beer bros, this should hit the spot.
