Normally I’m a rather big fan of the Anderson Valley beers but I simply couldn’t be really bothered by this one. I guess I lick thicker textures and darker tastes for winter beers.

Type: 12-oz. can
Glass: Clear 14.75-oz. porter/stout glass
From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $7.99 for a 6-pack
Purchased: Feb. 16, 2016
Consumed: Feb. 16, 2016
OK, I’m a sucker for Winter Warmers and I feel like I haven’t given Anderson Valley a fair shake. Was going to pick up just one can at Trader Joe’s, but saw it was only $7.99 for a 6-pack. Wasn’t feeling like getting a 6-pack of IPAs, so this was next best option.
Poured an amber, auburn, semi-clear color with 1-to-2 fingers of khaki white, rocky head. Vere serene setting underneath. Minimal wet lacing on the sides of the glass. Poor retention on the top. (Sight - 3.25)
Smelled more like a dark amber than a Winter Warmer. Got buttery caramel, sugary toffee, herbal hops, some menthol, dark fruits and plum juice. Very malty. (Smell - 3.50)
Taste was so much better than the nose and completely changed my perception of this beer. Got toffee, sugary caramel, dark fruits, hints of herbal hops, some menthol, toasted rye, creamy vanilla, faint hints of cinnamon and nutmeg, brown sugar and light molasses. (Taste - 3.75)
Medium body. Creamy-to-sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth finish. (Feel - 4.50)
This was a very interesting beer. I still don’t know if I consider it a Winter Warmer though. Like a mix between a Winter Warmer, Amber and an American Strong Ale. (Overall - 3.75)

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Malty aroma with vanilla and butter undertones. No real hops ... sorta overpowered by the spices.
I really hate saying this, but it reminds me of a vanilla cream soda .... and not the soda-shoppe kind, more like the artificial bottled kind.
This is a tough review for me to write. I love the Boont amber (almost certainly my favorite amber ale). But this one is going to take a hit. ... The diacetyl is hyper accentuated.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
bottle - Pours hazy amber-brown with a light tan head. It smells of caramel malt and spices. The flavor is sweet caramel/toffee malt and spices that are noticeable but not overpowering. It’s alright though overly sweet for me.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Syrupy brown-orange complexion. Looks silky and thick; half-finger of head. This one is a tad old (discounted) but the mustiness of the nose doesn’t detract.
Aroma is brown sugary but with a lovely nutty second wave that blunts it and takes the saccharine right out of it. Could have been cloying but isn’t. Cinnamon-like spices. Almost smells like when you walk into a brewery, and the mash tun is doing its thing.
The flavors are oats, finished oak, caramel/molasses sugars, and maple syrup. The sweetness is immediately followed by a nutty sugary tste. There are cereal grains and more of that brewery malt in the flavor, almost like taking a direct sip of the post-boil malt.
This is just a really good beer; it’s a throwback to malt-heavy English ales, or pre-IPA boom winter ales. Deceptively good.
