12 ounce bottle provided by porterhouse: The brew poured a deep brown topped by a huge foamy tan head and excellent lace on my pint glass. The aroma has notes of grassy and lightly piney hop, burnt malt, dry roasted coffee, chocolate powder and a bit of lactic sourness. The taste is twangy and acidic more than a porter should be. Under it all there is some roasty goodness but far to subdued. I agree with Degarth, more brown ale than porter. Nutty and dry finish confirmed that feeling. Lingering bittersweet chocolate and coffee may be the best aspect of the flavor profile. The mouth feel is dry and chalky. I think it is past it’s prime, so I well cut some slack here. Okay overall but worth the chance to taste something new.

12oz. Beer is cloudy due to bottle conditioning, deep red turning to brown. Aroma is yeasty giving way to some malt and grass. No hop aroma and just a touch of bitterness. Roasted malt takes center stage in the mouth with malt and grass supporting from the nose. Pleasant to drink but doesn’t feel like I’m going anywhere. Fine to drink, especially at just $1.33 a bottle. Yay beer!

Pours brown with an off white head. Smells of roasted malt, some sweet caramel, earthy. Tastes sweet ad nutty with a nice roasty element and a velvety finish.

Bottle - thanks mcox90. Pours a leathery brown color with a large, frothy beige head. Mild aroma is sweet. Nuts, roast, and light coffee. Tastes roasty with coffee and light floral notes. Just a shred of cocoa before a lingering bittersweet tail. Not bad, but not that great either.

Bottle thanks to porterhouse. Pours with a large, creamy khaki head over a murky brown body. Aroma of soap, dark fruits, cocoa and vanilla. Taste is hazelnuts and watery with light fruits and possibly a light infection. Watery mouthfeel with medium carbonation.

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark clear brown with a small khaki colored head. Aroma is roasted malts with a hint of coffee. Palate is a bit on the thin side with a fair amount of carbonation. First flavor is a bit of the hop, but that quickly fades and a bit of cocoa takes over. Also, some coffee notes as well as some nuttiness. Not as hearty as some porters, but a decent brew.

(Bottle). Very roasty aroma, some coffee. Dark reddish brown, with very large tan creamy head that lasts. Taste is extremely roasty, charcoal-ish, nice bitterness, a little hint of nuts, almost no chocolate. Mildly bitter finish. The body is a little thin, but otherwise a nice offering.

(Rating #1778)

4/30/2008: Andrew’s St. Nick’s Porter pours a toasty brown color with a very large cascading tan head. The beer itself is mostly clear and has a moderate amount of carbonation. The aroma presents roasted malt and some chocolate. Flavors include weak coffee, fruity malt, hints of chocolate, and a decent grassy bitterness in the crisp finish. It has a medium-light body with a smooth texture. Overall this beer isn’t complex, but it is well-balanced and easy to drink.

12 fluid ounce bottle from Treats in Wiscasset, Maine. Rating #36 for this beer...

Bottle... Pours dark brown and sits black with a huge, rocky, khaki head. Terrific retention. Mineral and fig aromas. Medium-bodied and über fizzy. Perfectly balanced, but so very thin. Hardly anything to it, but inoffensive and refreshing. Short, crisp, ultra clean finish with a whisper of bitter chocolate. More like a brown ale than a porter.
