3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
30-Jan-10 (22-oz bottle: Purchased 30-Dec-09 for $3.49 at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA) Doughy, dark bread, nuts, medium-roasted malt, some cola, a hint of chocolate, earth, vague mint, but also surprisingly fruity with red apple and a suggestion of plum and dates. Aromas of light roast, dough and cheese, so the nose is less pleasant than the flavor. Medium in body, yet surprisingly chewy well into the finish. Carbonation is moderate, but on the fizzy side. Dark ruddy-brown in color with a short-lived quarter-inch, light-tan head that fades quickly to a thin ring. Nice flavor in general, but not inspiring, so not a repeat purchase.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from liquor store in North Park: I kept wondering what style of beer this was, but it wasnít until I poured did I realize it was a dark lager almost porter like beer. The pour created a thick fluffy head as if I had just whipped up a bunch of egg whites, and the liquid was a dark brown that looked similar to a light tint on a car window. In the nose, there is a minimum of roasted malts and a hint bitter dark chocolate, but other than that there was nothing spectacular. The flavor is only a littler more complex than the aroma since there are more apparent elements pulling together this beer. The note worthy ingredients are a light toasted coffee bean, roast malts, scraped vanilla pod, and a bitter chocolate that does not taste of high quality. Also, there is a faint background of cream of some sort that does add some thicker texture towards the palate.
