3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 ante (3375) - Stockholm, - JUN 28, 2010
Bottled at Sorbon, Bromma, Sweden. Pours out in a dark brown, almost black colour with a small bubbly tan-coloured head. Sweet aroma of brown sugar, chocolate-sauce, soy and hot alcohol. Full-bodied with rich and dense notes of dark chocolate, burnt sugar, soy, peppery alcohol and burnt malts. Long hot and sweet finish of burnt malts, dark chocolate, caramel and alcohol. Flavorful but to unpolished and boozy for me.

22oz bottle: Pours a barely transparent dark mahogany with a stringy-lacing beige head. Has a sweet dark caramel and milk chocolate nose with a touch of oxidation. Starts with decent fullness and toasty dark caramel malts and some astringent earthy bitterness before a drier warming finish. Could use a little more balance, but a decent attempt at the style.

21-Jan-11 (22-oz bottle: Purchased 30-Dec-09 for $4.99 at Texas Liquor in Carlsbad, CA) This is without a doubt the best Angel City beer I’ve tried over the years, by far. A delicious and highly flavorful confection of milk chocolate, licorice, marzipan, chocolate milk, and prunes is balanced beautifully by roasty, dry and bitter flavors of dark toast, ashtray, black coffee, and dark chocolate. The nose is more straight-forward, but no less enjoyable or balanced, boasting aromatic scents of coffee, toast, chocolate bar, licorice, brown sugar, and a touch of earthiness that is presumably the work of one year of aging. It’s full-bodied on the palate, but never comes across as heavy, syrupy, or cloying. Carbonation is light-medium, and though it’s fairly sweet, the beer finishes dry on the palate with some light tannins. Dark-brown in color with good clarity, and the beige head pours to half an inch before settling to a wide, creamy ring and depositing a few spots of lace on the glass. Perhaps the extra 13 months of aging has benefited this beer, but I find this bottle has been emptied quite quickly, and so has the last glass. I know Angel City doesn’t typically elicit excitement in the local beer scene and I’ve been rather critical of their beers over these many years, but I’ll eagerly give credit where credit is due. This Imperial Stout is really delicious and worth seeking out.
