Bottle from Grima, thanks! Deep dark brown color, almost opague. Roast and apple syrup in the aroma. Apple syrup, roast and licorice in the sweetish flavor. Velvety mouthfeel. Not world class, but pleasant enough.

33cl bottle at The Roll Up in Siem Reap. Pours dark brown with a nice light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt with a hint of caramel. Quite sweet and not much bitterness, but still pretty nice in this corner of the world. (2012-05-02)

In Cambodia stout is popular among the richer locals and is called "srabier kmau" (black beer). The red label on the image calls it "Aekstraa Staau". This one has never really caught on, the locals prefer Black Panther and ABC, and I can’t blame them it’s not very good. I recommend staying clear of it; though I typically prefer stouts over lagers I think the regular Angkor is much better made here.

(330ml bottle) Pours dark brown body with a medium creamy tan head. Aroma of roasted grain, raisins, and caramel. Flavor of raisins, burnt grains, caramel, and baking cocoa with a dry, bitter finish.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a slightly clear glow at the bottom with a nice, dense, thick light brown head, about two centimetres thick. Aroma of roasted malt, oatmeal, chocolate, earth, metal and some raisins. Medium to full-bodied; Dense thick earthy roasted malt with a lot of caramelised sugars, some nuts and a bit of showing of the alcohol. Aftertaste is mostly earthy with some of the roasted malt and a bit of sugars - nice. Overall, a pleasant and differing beer compared to most of the other lagers here - a ton of flavour and a good dense body goes well in the evenings - not so much during the day. I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Pencil Supermarket in Phnom Penh, Cambodia earlier today on 03-April-2012 for 4500 Rial (US$1.10) sampled in my hotel room here in Phnom Penh.

330ml bottle, bought at Samudera Supermarket, Sihanoukville, Cambodia!
The beer in the glass is deep black with a creamy fine brown head. It smells just subtle malty, very chocolaty and slightly roasty. Starts with malty and chocolaty notes, slightly roasty and burnt malt in the background. The middle part shows very roasted, slightly hoppy bitter and again very chocolaty. The beer comes in a slightly bitter finish with lots of chocolate and burnt malts. The alcohol isn’t noticeable at any time! Surprisingly great stout!

Can’t recall who brought this to me. Thanks, you. Poured out black with a thin red line in the light. Big bubbly medium brown head rises and settles leaving a disaster in my glass. Slight cardboard but nothing to worry about, roasted malts and chocolate, a bit milky, slight minerally nose, oddly places fruity thing. The taste is pretty good - maybe the best product ever out of Cambodia.. well, I’ve only had one product before so I’d say it’s top 2 for sure. Ample lactic sweetness and a sourness that tags along with that flavour, smooth medium roasted malts, some chocolate of the milky kind, some mineral something. On the dry side for aftertaste. Quite drinkable but finishes quickly for lingerings. Weevils.

Danke an Grima!
7/10/11/11/10/11

UPDATED: FEB 18, 2012 33cl bottle at the Riverside Bistro in Phnom Penh. A straight export stout no longer imitating Guinness, easily distinguishable from ABC Stout and also from tinned Black Panther. No liquorice, no coffee, no dark chocolate, just burnt malt. Thin for an 8% beer but nicely balanced so eventually surprising drinkable.

Can at Paul’s tasting. Pours a clear brown with a thin white head. Light toast and roast, a touch of malt. Medium bodied, slight smoke and roast. Chocolate and char. Light smoke and roast on the finish, roast bitterness, slightly burnt.
