4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Thick dark brown body with big tan head. Rich yet very refined chocolate, tofee and brown sugar together with earthy hops and even some smoke. Interesting flavour, with light sourness, roasted malts and a humous hops it makes a great balanced and refined brew. Dry yet caramel-like aftertaste. Bubbly and never sticky body. Much better than I expected. Don’t drink too cold. (33cl bottle from Bière Révolution)

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Dark brown head with heavily roasted malts aromas. Notes of dark chocolate. Petrol black body. Taste of heavy roasted malt. Woody and medium bitter. Too much for me.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Very dark brown, average and mostly diminishing light brown head. Moderate to full, malty and lightly sweetish aroma, some roasted malt - light burnt malt, light spiciness (pepper) and light hoppyness. Body is medium to full, malty and lightly sweetish flavor, some roasted malt and light coffee, light spiciness and licorice. Finish is average to long, malty and dryish - lightly sweetish, roasted malt - light burnt malt, light - some sharp peppery spiciness, light - some hoppyness. Interesting roasted Belgian ale - also some hoppyness present. I am not sure about that peppery spiciness is OK or would this be better without.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: AUG 7, 2014 Bottle from Racine’s in Cassel.
A stout-like biere brune that shows a strong chocolate and black patent malt core. The rawness of black patent char combined with considerable yeast effects (solvent, metal, pepper ) in the nose give it a strange Belgo-stout resemblance. Full bodied with rich and filling carbonation delivering weighty sugars. Aroma/flavors center on coffee and chocolate malt and roasted malt with subtler touches of dark cara malt fruitiness (plum, raisin). Chewy, lengthy finish segues into spicy black pepper and licorice. A fun beer, though not very complex. The roast / char astringency is too bracing, and the texture remains too chewy in the mouth, but the overall effect is nice. Funny that they call this Brune when it is BLACK. Stout de Garde?

Une brune française et artisanale ’’stoutée’’. Arômes de café et chocolat. C’est assez sympathique.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Color negro, reflejos caoba y espuma beige. Bien.

2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
750 ml. bottle sampled. Procured from the gift shop of La Coupole. Drank outside. Great label & “imperial smout” is a hillarious term, this sounds like a bad Chinese knock-off of “imperial stout”. Dark brown, creamy brown / beige head. Smells sour, tart & overripe wild red berries, charcoal, charred wood, roast, spoiled, smells like a bit on top like a beer that has been left outside to stand in a glass overnight. Tastes of overripe sour red berries, vinegar, charred & burned malts, actually tastes like coal, huge on ashes, coffee grounds, very lingering charcoal & ashes tastes. Body is that of an infected beer, hard to drink more than a few sips of. This isn’t good to simply put it, it wasn’t overly expensive but not the cheapest either & a total waste overall.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Very dark brown with dark brown lacing foam head. Aroma is coffee, some chocolate, some herbs. Taste nice bitter, coffee, some bread. Does not qualify for American Strong Ale, more a stout to me. Lasting bitter aftertaste. (Nantes 201402)

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
330 ml bottle. L13276. BB 01/2015. From saveur-biere.com.
Black colour with a small tan head.
Chocolate, Coke, mild roasted malt and sugar in the aroma.
The flavour is roasted malt, ash, mild coffee, sweetness, bitterish hops and liquorice. Not very tasty. A bit unbalanced but rich.
