33 cl bottles liberated from a small supermarket in Cassel, northern France. Bills itself nowadays as Anosteké Imperial Smout (the last word spelt correctly). It’s one of those linguistic ’in jokes’. Dark, deep, a wee bit too hoppy and with a definitive streak of burnt Pirelli in the mix.

Quack-Duck (5920) - Down South, GERMANY - MAY 13, 2012
bottle from Village de la Bičre. Deep black colour, mid-sized dark beige head. Roasetd malts, caramel, espresso coffee, dark chocolate combined with a spicy hoppy punch in the finish. Smooth palate with medium carbonation transports these flavours very well.

Bottle from L’Abbaye des Saveurs, Lille
Black color, with medium sized beige head. There is some roasted malts in the aroma, coffee, and light liquorice. Round body, with a strong coffee flavor, dark chocolate; there is some late liquorice and roasted malts; strong bitterness, and some of it comes from the roasted malts. Very well brewed.

Foamy tan head that looks like a sepia photograph once it dissipates. Sweet, malty aroma. Slightly sweet taste giving way to moderate bitterness and a slightly heavy, lingering mouthfeel. Interesting but not exceptional, although not really my style.

33 cl bottle, Sheffield, UK via Paris. Maple caramel aroma laced with some resin. Brown sugar, cloves and and a woody vanilla come through with a long, spruce infused finish. Tongue numbing at the end. Interesting.

Bottled. A black beer with a huge dark brown head. The aroma has notes of chocolate, malt, caramel, and some metal. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, metal, caramel, and rotting fruits, leading to a dry finish.

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of jaghana. Pours an opaque black with a lacing light brown head. Roasty nose, dark dried fruits and some friendly phenols. Medium body, sweet licorice roast, vanilla, lots of fruit and a sweet, roasty finish. Absolutely not enough hops to be a Black IPA. I’d call this an interesting Belgian Brown. Label says: "Imperial Smout"!! 011211
