An historical brew, harking back to an era when barley was cured over open fires and beer was stored in oak.

Tap @A&H. Hazy brown, frothy light beige head. Light fruity smoke and malt aroma. Similar flavour, more caramel, light bitterness and lingering, discrete smoke. Not bad, but not impressive either.

London 2014 - September 6th, with harrisoni & Theydon_Bois - on draught, at the brewery in Bermondsey. At least I think it was on draught. Bright ruby/amber with a smallish but lasting off-white head. Simple but clean and appealing aroma of middling nutty roast and light campfire, bare alcohol presence. Taste follows, a touch of kerosene and some dry herbal bitterness for balance (7+). Light airy body, medium-quick dry slightly smoky finish - very drinkable indeed, just enough zing to the smoke to remind you it’s there.

Aroma: bacon, smoked malts, grain malts, some chocolate. Appearance: clear, dark brown, small, creamy, beige head. Taste: light bitter. Palate: grain and smokes malts again, bitters continue, remain mild. Overall: nice Smoked, could do with more intensity and complexity, but very drinkable. Bottle from The Bottle Shop, Bermondsey.

Gravity cask at the brewery taproom. Pours lightly hazed brown with a creamy beige head. Very mellow smoke in the nose with suggestions of brown sugar and candied fruits. Medium sweet flavor with some toasty, bready malts, brown bread, maple syrup, ripening fruits. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly sticky sweet to finish with more toasty brown bread, mild earthy bitterness, faint cocoa, more ripe fruits, berries, maple syrup. Not bad.
