3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Gravity cask at the 2016 Cambridge Beer Festival. Reddish brown, clear and flat with little visible carbonation. The smoke is muted in the aroma, but there’s also some forest floor, leather and beef tea notes. Sweet taste turning to intensely bitter, almost acrid, for the long finish. Horehound and overripe mango in the aftertaste. Body’s pretty thin and flat. Good but not great.

Ah, now that’s a fine smokey brown right there. Nutty and malty, lightly sweet turning bitter in the finish, all overlaid with smokey goodness.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from London Beer Lab. Brown-black with a small beige-yellow head. Wood dominates from the off. The smoke is light, but it’s there in the background, providing dryness to balance the sweet malt, toffee and brown sugar. There’s a little dry red wine too, but it keeps coming back to the wood. Maybe just a tad too dry and woody for my taste, but nevertheless a decent brew.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap, poured into a stemmed tulip. The aroma is that of mild smoke with grape jelly, and a blend of chocolate and caramel late. The hue is a rich, dark maroon shade with small suds in it’s brown head that retains moderately well with a mild lacing. The taste is a medium sweet and medium light bitterness. The creamy texture is slightly sticky with a thin, fuzzy carbonation and a medium body consisting of flavors of smoke, molasses, chocolate, nuts, and dark fruit. The finish is fairly clean with a bright quality of smoke and spice turning to grape juice and leaving an aftertaste of smoked, bitter coffee and dark chocolate with some nuts. it’s mildly cloying and lingers for a bit.
