An historical brew, harking back to an era when barley was cured over open fires and beer was stored in oak.

Keg at the brewery - beautiful ruby body, spicy, red fruity aroma. Very nuanced and well-integrated smokiness. Equally so, well-rounded and full-bodied. Some herbs and citrus hops in aftertaste.

Red color, small beige head. Smell and taste malts, only a slight hint of smoke though it’s definitely there. Decent body and carbonation.

Pocked beige over chestnut. Cocoa, incense, and a touch of phenols on the nose - fragrant and tasty. Fresh brown soda loaf malts, some chocolate, a whisper of wood smoke - more lox than Scotch - and earthy hops. Caramel comeback and tingly linger. Light to medium, fizzy, some chew --Smoke like a scalpel and a tremendous brown underneath it. Lots of cocoa powder. Maybe a bit thin and fizzy, but that’s to style, IIRC. Impressive.

Draft - Light wood smoke, nutty and a bit of roast malts. Cloudy brown with a very rich beige head. Lots of smoke and bacon, toffee and a finish of charcoal with some bitterness. Quite nice.

Cask at Cask P&K. Browny orange, fairly clear, small white head. Aroma of smoked sausage, touch of cinnamon. Body is medium, smooth, low carbonation. Taste is lightly smoked malts, a touch of decaying fruit sweetness, lightly vegetal, nutmeg. Not bitter but instead has a thin semisweet malty vibe. OK.

330ml bottle. Hazy brown colour with huge, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, beige head. Smoky aroma, sweetish-woody, cautious herbal hoppy overtones, slightly nuttily background, hazelnut, a touch of nougat. Taste is initially slightly sweet, nuttily malty, hazelnut and nougat, later more and more dry, smoky, tarry, woody; slightly bitter finish, slightly sticky palate. Not ostensibly smoky, diversified, rough and primordial in a delectable way. Nice bottle design.
