COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by guest brewer: Finnish Pekka Marjamaa, who's regular job is as brewmaster at the brewpub Teerenpeli (ca. 100 km north of Helsinki). The beer has a nice aroma and flavor of smoke - though not as powerful and overwhelming as smoked beers from southern Germany. The wort has been extracted at 72 degrees Celsius, which gives it a bit of sweetness to balance the smoke. 1000 liters is brewed from: 40 kg pilsner malt 50 kg münchner malt 40 kg caramel malt 90 kg smoked malt Bitter hop: Hallertauer Aroma hop: Tettnang and Saaz Yeast: Hancock's lager yeast

Draught at the brewpub
Hazy red amber color. Unfortunately the aroma shows more an infection than the smoked. The flavor is actually smokey, the body is too weak, caramel taste, some infection too. I don’t think it’s a great beer anyway, but it’s spoiled.

DBF 2005. Amber bronze, good off white head and moderate condition. Low sweet woody smokiness in the nose, soft and sweet in the mouth with traces of toffee and more smokiness and a gentle lingering woodiness in the finish.

Amber, small brownish head. Aroma brings diacetyl, toffee, butter and smoke. Smoky flavor, malty at first, smoked fish, bitter and a bit salty. A bit thin.

To me this was a sort of combination of German smoked beer a la Bamberg and a Finnish Sahti. Slightly sour smokiness and sweet maltiness with a touch of chocolate in the background.

Retired? I had it yesterday at Apollo! Anyway, here we go...Red-ish amber colour, small head. Smoke and toffee aroma. Smooth flavour of smoked ham with a touch of toffee. It ain’t Schlenkerla but still very drinkable.

Tap at Flakhaven brewpub, Odense, August 2005. Just as well Sigmund turned up in Odense as he was inside drinking this when we met him. The previous day we’d tried the other Flakhaven beers sitting at the tables outside and there had been no mention that this beer was available, so I would have missed it. Dark brown colour. Mildly smoky, with some fishy notes in the aroma (Jacob wouldn’t like this then) and coal tar in the flavour. Not a smoky bacon flavour like a German rauchbier. The aroma reminded me more of a ship’s chandlers. Interesting.
