3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 f351c4v (411) - Mechanicsburg, USA - FEB 6, 2009
Pours a hazy brown with a tiny white head. Good lacing, however. Very sweet aroma, a little fruity. Biting carbonation reveals a bittersweet body, lots of candi sugar, yeast, dried dark fruit. Oh, its good, as dubbels are a favorite... It has the parts that make up a good dubbel, just not put together correctly. Still, worth finding.

Despite the fact that one of the great attributes of Belgian beers is that they cannot be contained by style guidelines, I discourage anyone from thinking of this as a dubbel. I’ve heard that there’s been some discussion by the BJCP to distinguish between Belgian abbey ales and American abbey ales, which would allow for better classification of this beer. Medium amber with off-white, evanescent head. Smell is spice, yeast, mild light fruitiness (plum). Rather light in flavor and mouthfeel; spice is dominant with slight cherry and plum underneath. Tasty session beer.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a lightly hazy ruby with a medium beige head. Dark fruit, yeast and candy. Estery yeast. Big sweetness, candy, light bubble gum. More yeasty esters, lots of sweetness. Long pungent bitter finish.

Cloudy, dark copper color, very little head. Scent of spices, with slight caramel malts. A bit thin, but flavorful, the spices also dominate the taste. Thin and smooth, adequately carbonated. Easy drinker; doesn’t really stand out among dubbels or ABC’s brews.

Deep amber/copper pour with creamy off white head and lace. Brown sugar and coriander aroma. Brown sugar, sour malt, and Belgian yeast on the flavor. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Nice beer.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 bobaidan (446) - Southington, Connecticut, USA - JUN 29, 2010
On tap in Harrisburg. Pours much lighter than I would expect from a dubble. Aroma is dark fruit with a hint of yeast. Medium in body with a fair level of carbonation. Flavor is a bit light, but not bad with typical belgian yeast characteristics and a fair amount of sweet malt.
2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 kramer (3454) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 18, 2010
On tap, at brewery. Pours a hazy orangish amber with a small ring of off-white head. The nose is fruity, yeasty, and has some light esters of banana and bubblegum. A little thin in the flavor and too sweet. The yeast just doesn’t put out enough character to develop the esters and dark fruits I crave from a Dubbel. There’s some caramel and light alcohol. Finishes with a bit of an off chemical-like note. Mouthfeel is a little sticky and clingy with moderate alcohol on the finish as well. Overall it’s just too thin and blah. Weak effort.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Damico (1391) - Royersford, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 4, 2010
Wow - bananas on aroma for sure and the Belgian yeast as well. The swampy brown color has a great white head on top. The flavor is a bit fruity, fig notes with an okay after taste.

Had on tap at the Camp Hill location. Was a bit dissapointed but not surprised when it was served in a shaker glass instead of a tulip or trappist. Pours a hazy amber brown color with a medium layer of froathy offwhite head. Aroma reminded me of those sugared orange slice candies I used to eat as a kid and a tad bit of raising bread dough. Flavor a bit too sweet up front, almost sugary, medium sweet citric presence, yeasty easters and a tad bit of spice. Usually I’m a huge fan of dubbels but this didn’t fit the bill.
