Commercial Description:
Obbie’s Grand Cru is the first in a series of Belgian style beers to come from the Gettysburg ABC. This Belgian Golden combines a slight spiciness with a complex maltiness. The bittering is evident and balanced against a pleasant fruity character. Although the abv. (7.2) is somewhat elevated, this beer is very nice and effervescent on a nice summer day. Obbie is the brain child of one of our great Mug Club Members - Scott Balthasar. If you wish, you may visit Scott’s website and purchase apparel featuring Obbie, or as he is better known... St. Obnoxious!

Draft at Harrisburg. I am rather surprised at the low rating. Oh well, Belgians are not my forte. Pours golden amber with a white head. Aroma of lemon, wheat malt, and belgian esters. Typical belgian mouthfeel and texture. Flavor of pale wheat malt, honey, and spice. There is a decent amount of sweetness, but not overly sweet or sticky. Moderate bitterness on the finish, joined by some yeasty flavors and a hint of alcohol. I thought this was a respectable attempt at a Belgian. This reminds me of a golden triple, but with less alcohol and bite.

Draft at the Harrisburg brewery. 30-40% opaque light orange and yellow colored body. Huge sugary nose full of perfumy, sugary soap and coriander scents with light yeast esters. Some light spicy ginger as well, but overall it does not smell good at all - plastic and sugar notes far too heavy. Sharp on the tongue, sugary and spicy, extremely cloying and oversweet, then stale and emtpy in the finish. Tastes highly alcoholic, but also full of unfermented sugars. Unclean and disorganized, and difficult to finish.

Draft at the Gettysburg location, July 2006. A hazy orange beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet yeasty with strong notes of fruit. The flavor is very sweet and very fruity, with light notes of yeast mixing in as well as wood, leading to a dry end with the woody notes lingering around. The body is thick.

On tap at Gettysburg location, July 2006. After developing a theme of subtlety in the previous few beers in the sampler, we returned to an earlier theme - namely sweetness - with this one. Too much sweetness for me. Other might see it differently. Hazy orange colour. Heavily spiced, Belgian tripel style with bags of Curacao and orange peel in evidence. This added a touch of sharp bitterness but, all in all, the overriding sweetness detracted from my enjoyment. So, overall, a slight disappointment.

stumbled across this downtown h-burg at McGraths, which is odd because neither ABC location had it in when I went there. fairly sweet, and fruity.
