750 ml. bottle from a trade with jerd16. Thanks Rich, for this rare treat! It pours a very dark brown/black color with a nice, fine head of tan foam. The aroma is hard roasted with notes of anise, licorice and strong coffee. Deep, dark and chocolaty. The flavor is amazingly complex with notes of dark fruit up front. Mildly tangy plum, raisins and apricots before the coffee comes in with some roast and chocolate. The finish is perfectly balanced with warming, roasted coffee and brighter, fruitier apricot and plum. All this with some background hints of anise and dark chocolate. The body is velvety smooth and creamy. Wow. This stuff is freakin awesome. One of the best beers of the year for me.

The first thing to note is that this beer is like a black IPA float with coffee ice cream. A rich brown, dark sand-coloured head that is creamy, frothy, foamy (a little reluctant in coming, it might be said, but this is understandable given the amount of coffee) and fair sized. Opaque black body. Smell is piney hops and a bucket load of citrus. Or perhaps more like warm, sharp, and roasty coffee beans. Actually more like hops, resin, and citrus. No. It is warming coffee..... WOW, it is both in equal measure but in uniquely distinct ways... Iíve never known an aroma like this before. The taste is bitter and kicks you in the back of the throat. But the mouth is chocolatey, coffee, and creamy with a little alcohol burn. Amazing beer - absolutely magical!

Bottle from Trembling Madness, York. This inky black beer pours with a thin tan head. It has very strong, rich fruity/floral coffee flavours, sweet chocolate and floral fruit notes with a roasted bitter finish. Excellent!

Black with large head. Roasted coffee malts with very fresh hoppy aroma. Taste bitter coffee with lasting bitter hops aftertaste.

Pitch black, good light brown head. Very hoopt brew with a nice chocolate and coffee finish. Lovely brew, needs just a small boost me.

This tasty beer was sent to my by Ben - thanks! Pours opaque black with a very small secondary brown head that leaves pretty nice lacing when all is said and done. Aroma has strong notes of coffee, roast, espresso, floral, perfume, chocolate. Flavor follows, light plus sweet, medium bitter, coffee, ashes, roasty, cocoa, floral hops, perhaps a slight touch of pine. Lingering bitterness into the far finish. Medium plus body, oily mouthfeel. This is a nice beer - thanks again Ben!

Bottle from House of Trembling Madness bottle shop, York. Almost black. Tiny, but tight, lasting, tan head. Looks like an espresso in a glass. Aroma isnít coffee straight away, as I expected. Rather, itís the hops at first. Grassiness initially, then the dark malts pop up. Coffee too, green, rather than roasted. A hint of cured meat smoke. Taste is astringently dry at first. A sweetness saunters along after everyone else has been and gone. Big, dry, roast coffee bitter palate and finish.

Really thick, creamy mouth feel. Flavours of molasses, black treacle, liquorice and some grassy hop. Finish is big, bitter coffee, burnt malt and cocoa.

On tap @ Holyrood 9a. Pours ink black with a small beige head. Aroma is of roasted malt and coffee. Taste is of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and some dark fruits. However, I donít really get the hops in there, but thatís okay - itís a great beer. Sweet, with a full(ish) body and soft carbonation. This is one good, tasty and easily drinkable beer. Love it.
