COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Special - Freestyle Fridays #13. Also available bottle conditioned (at 7.5%).
Someone started a vicious rumour that we were brewing a 2012 IBU beer to mark the London 2012 Olympics. So, naturally, we did... Bravo and Zeus (IKE) first wort additions followed by late additions of Galena and Summit.

33cl bottle from Bitter Virtue, Southampton. An opaque black pour with a ruby red glow against the light and a billowing tan head; the aroma is intense with bitter Belgian chocolate and a touch of wood smoke. It’s absolutely bursting with flavour - ripe purple fruit, licorice, burnt treacle, and tar setting the head ringing. The finish is comparitively calm, but full of toasty, deeply roasted malts and rather dry. This is incredibly satisfying and beats the Kernel Scanner Darkly Black IPA I’d just tried hands down.

330ml bottle from Euston Tap. Almost black colour, big foamy head. Spicy hop aroma. Big flavour of biscuit, coffee & hops. Long lasting hoppy aftertaste. A really big hoppy ale.

Bottle from Great Grog. Pours a very dark brown colour with a thick tan head. Aroma of pine, pineapple, caramel, coffee and alcohol. Great bitterness and similar flavours. Moderate carbonation and a foamy mouth-feel. Very nice!

Another seething menace from Arbor. Strong coffee nose with 90% cocoa lindt chocolate and licorice coming through. Pours a deep, dark brown with a fluffy head the colour of a double espresso crema. The flavour follows the nose with rich, dark notes in spades - bitter, bitter cocoa, buttery, burnt malts, more licorice, some aniseed, some flambeed figs, and a long, long, oily finish. Rich, complex, chocolatey, bitter and biting, this is a corker from the best of the new Bristol breed of progressive brewers.

Bottle from Pete. Jet black, low cream top. Smells car piss and pine + coal tar. Very stouty roast: crunchy, super bitter. The hops add a err, not sure. Perhaps they add a thin slice of perfumed mouth tremble. This really is very bitter indeed. A great UK beer, with a loooong aftertaste.

330ml bottle at 7.5%. Pours jet black with a large head. Aroma is dusty cocoa, grapefruit and a little lemon. Taste is mostly bitter grapefruit with some coffee and cocoa on the aftertaste. Low carbonation but full in the mouth.

7.5% Bottle from Trembling Madness. An inky black beer that pours with a HUGE foamy tan coloured head. It has chocolate and liquorice flavours, very strong spicy (slight sour?) orange marmalade notes and pine/grapefruit and smoke on the finish.

Bottle at the Semi-Final Tasting. Deep brown color with a big espresso colored head. The nose is big roasty chocolate, wood, coffee ice cream and marshmallow. Some blackberry. The taste is quite hoppy tropical fruits. Plenty of pineapple and salty tang. A bit puckering, giving over to a lightly syruppy dry chocolate coffee finish. Big body, bold. A bit creamy. Overall, a really nice black IPA! Amazing to see a decent commemorative beer!

Bottle.Black with a small head.Bitterness hits you from the first taste and lasts. Not a lot of hoppiness which increases the struggle that I have with a black IPA. This is more like a very bitter stout. Strength was 7.5 per cent. A lovely beer to be drunk slowly and appreciated.
