Bottle at Bruce’s, London. Enjoy the rarity, friends. Pours clear, deep brown with red highlights, and a good, firm beige foam head. Dusty chocolate in the nose, some dark candies, hints of toasty toffee. Medium sweet flavor, lots of dry wood, some hints of earth, dirt, light alcohol, baking cocoa. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Quite dry to finish, charred wood, further baking cocoa, subtle roast, dirt. Quite mellow overall with nice flourishes here and there.

Bottle at home. Dark brown-black, thick creamy beige head fades with lots of lacing. Soft warm cocoa, slight tobacco, slightly earthy oak, slightest touch of vanilla on the nose. Lots of dark roast chocolate flavours, just a hint of sweetness. Quite sharp bitter roast, medium body, charcoal bitterness and a hint of soft sharp fruits on the finish. Ok. A bit unbalanced.

Bottle 50 cl. Courtesy of fonefan. Pours an opaque brown with a rough off-white head. Very subdued roast and a soft woody edge. The roastiness grows a little in the flavor, but still it’s only a medium-bodied beer. Some molasses and licorice with a little alcohol heat late. 060413

Nov 2012 - One of only 200 bottles, porter aged for 10 months in cognac barrel. Tastes of roasted barley, little watery, good rich mouthfeel. Cognac imparts a spicy sharpness and some rounded dairy-like flavour similar to the taste of the Innis and Gunn beers, bit of vegetable flavour, dry hop-like finish. This is OK, but not very balanced.

Bottle. Very dark brown, thin beige head. Nose: filter coffee, bitter dark chocolate, plums. Taste: much more pronounced - black coffee, bittersweet chocolate, liquorice, marzipan, cognac. Low carbonation, medium bodied. Very nice indeed.
