Commercial Description:
Imperial Brown Ale. IBU's= 26. Tasting Notes: A nice bold summer beer with a huge floral hoppy nose, medium body, and a well balanced palate full of bready carmelly malts balanced by rich floral hops. Medium carbonation contributes to the drinkability of this unique ale. We are pleased to present this limited release collaboration beer jointly designed and brewed at the Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti and Dark Horse Brewing Co in Marshall. Dark Corner is a celebration of the creativity and passion that Michigan brewers Matt Greff and Aaron Morse bring to their craft. It is also a tribute to their cooperative spirit and sense of community. This year’s recipe is an ode to simplicity. It is an imperial brown ale with lots of rich malts for a pleasing palate with hints of toasted bread an caramel. Hops are floral and understated which contributes to its balance and drinkability. The 6 packs are custom-drawn collectibles. Next year’s Dark Corner will be a new brew with a new story.

BIg thanks to Styles for trading this one to me. RED CAP. Pours a dark brown and has a massive light tan head. The head is not going away so this is going to be a tough one to pour. Aroma is pretty big on the roasted nuts and also has a nice amount of malts. As it warms I am getting some hops as well. The flavor is sharp tartish malts, roasted nuts, metallic, cocoa. Body is a little thin but overall it is pretty decent. The head retention was so long that it was almost annoying. Still trying to get the damn thing poured!!!

12 oz. bottle, red cap, courtesy of Styles, thanks. aroma is perfumey with a touch of grass and spice. pours a reddish brown with a BIG foamy tan head, packed tight with big bubbles, but looks like whipped mocha cream on the top. not quite sure what to make of the flavor...kinda toasty, kinda sweet and a bit spicy with some lingering, almost sour, bitterness. an interesting brew.

I’d call it thin-bodied. Pours a bit muddy, but a nice ruddy brown. Some lingering head drifts in and out. Toasted malt, brown sugar and a bit of sourness weave in and out of the flavor profile. Some hop bitterness in the flavor. Perfumey in the nose - very nice. Slightly more alcohol presence that would be desired, making the package less robust than it could be.

Red cap. Hazy red body with abundant sediment, thick puffy cream head. Spicy, hoppy nose, toasty and grassy with potpourri characteristics and earthy bitterness. Rich, floral body, emphasizing perfumey hops notes and a peppery earthiness, backed by sweet, delicate caramely, toasty malt and just a hint of chocolate. Creamy, soft body. I pegged this as a hoppy amber ale, so it’s interesting to see the beer is an interpretation of brown ale. I much preferred this version to the black cap version brewed at Dark Horse.

Bottle, thanks kmweaver/artusory. Cloudy brown/red with a white head. Hoppy nose with caramel and a little cherry. Flavor has notes of hoppy citrus and pine then big caramel, dark fruits, cherry, light chocolate and brown sugar. Medium bodied (perhaps a tad thin) with moderate carbonation. Kind of a like an IPA/Brown Ale/Doppelbock-tasting hybrid. Interesting.

12oz bottle, red sticker cap, Arbor version, courtesy of artusory. Thanks, Ryan! Pours a bright, orange-amber color; khaki-colored head with good lacing. Floral and slightly vegetal aroma; a bit biscuity and grainy. Significantly better than the other version. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: doughy and overripe fruits; fruit leather and a biscuity, grainy core; pleasant citrus hop presence. Medium, grassy and chewy malt finish.

(12oz bottle, tasted side-by-side with Dark Horse version, thanks kmweaver) Medium tan head that diminishes rapidly atop hazy copper body. Aroma is moderately sweet, pine, cherry/plum, some cookie dough. Taste is moderately sweet, pine, cherry/raisin, caramel. Medium-full body, some effervescence. Much hoppier than, and much preferred to, the other version.

The pour is resinous, amber-hued, letting only a bit of shadow through. Lovely floral aromatics with oranges and pineapple in a hoppy punch. Quite nice. Substantial dark malts lurk underneath, with a similarly unrefined grainy edge. Hotter to taste, but also brighter, with tropical fruits, some grasses and lavender. Fairly soft and smooth in malt sweetness. High carbonation, with a pleasant oaky warmth – a polished realization of the abrasive, dirty barrel tones of its counterpart. Seems to land in sunnier territory with a better use of hops. More delicate. Thanks for sharing, Ryan!
