It pours a transparent reddish-brown with a small off-white head that dies quickly. The flavor starts fruity with some faint roast in the background. It finishes with a mild citrus hoppiness with some faint chocolate. MI2CA (1266), Noblesville, Indiana, USA

Pours transparent brown with a huge head and great lacing. Flavor is nutty leaning towards pecans, toasted malts and a touch of alcohol. Palate is creamy and smooth. A tasty brown that packs a punch. argo0 (7041), Washington DC, USA

Aroma is moderately sweet, pine, cherry/plum, some cookie dough. Taste is moderately sweet, pine, cherry/raisin, caramel. Medium-full body, some effervescence. Much hoppier than, and much preferred to, the other version. emacgee (1892), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA

The head was profuse, it was almost funny watching how little liquid could produce so much head. The aroma is sweet, a little Belgian, malty, bready, and citrusy. The flavor is sweet, caramel, a little toasty, nutty, and some alcohol. The palate is a bit dry. Stine (1381), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 31, 2007 Updated: Sep 2, 2007The pour is resinous, amber-hued, letting only a bit of shadow through. Lovely floral aromatics with oranges and pineapple in a hoppy punch. Quite nice. Substantial dark malts lurk underneath, with a similarly unrefined grainy edge. Hotter to taste, but also brighter, with tropical fruits, some grasses and lavender. Fairly soft and smooth in malt sweetness. High carbonation, with a pleasant oaky warmth – a polished realization of the abrasive, dirty barrel tones of its counterpart. Seems to land in sunnier territory with a better use of hops. More delicate. Thanks for sharing, Ryan! Silphium (2160), Haslett, Michigan, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 5, 2007 Red cap. Hazy red body with abundant sediment, thick puffy cream head. Spicy, hoppy nose, toasty and grassy with potpourri characteristics and earthy bitterness. Rich, floral body, emphasizing perfumey hops notes and a peppery earthiness, backed by sweet, delicate caramely, toasty malt and just a hint of chocolate. Creamy, soft body. I pegged this as a hoppy amber ale, so it’s interesting to see the beer is an interpretation of brown ale. I much preferred this version to the black cap version brewed at Dark Horse.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 24, 2007 12 Oz Bottle. Fantastic aroma of rich hop cones, candied strawberries and old balsamic. A wonderful amalgam of hops, creamy malt and fruit character. A real Barleywine beckoning. Bright, fresh and alive. A little of the ABC signature hay and animal note creeps in. Pours a pale mahogany edged in tawny gold and crowned with a tremendous half rocky, half cream soaped, tinted with a faint bit of henna. Flavor finds a noticeable coffee character amongst a less distinguished profile, there’s rustic, woody earth and grain, with some faint old world spice and a hint of floral qualities. There’s alcohol and yeast that fermented too warm. Seems well attenuated, yet somehow thin, with not enough chewiness and full texture. The smack is a little greasy and ridden with some cloying sugars, puckering yeast byproducts and lots of nutty residuals. Some peanut character. A bitter smack and bits of mineral. Thanks Sean! kmweaver (2501), Sebastopol, California, USA

Pours a bright, orange-amber color; khaki-colored head with good lacing. Floral and slightly vegetal aroma; a bit biscuity and grainy. Significantly better than the other version. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: doughy and overripe fruits; fruit leather and a biscuity, grainy core; pleasant citrus hop presence. Medium, grassy and chewy malt finish.
