Scopey (6909) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - DEC 29, 2012
Bottle from Mr Lawrence Wine Merchants. It pours very dark brown with a gigantic beige head. The nose is smooth coffee, light roast, lactose, some raspberry and jam in the background. The taste is bitter instant coffee, roasty, wood, toast, slight burnt notes and earth with a very dry finish. Light body and moderate carbonation. Too thin and one-dimensional. Not enough body to carry this sort of thing off.

Bottle from Mr Lawrence Wine Merchants, Brockley. Reddish-brown pour with a beige head. Full on coffee aroma, quite vegetative. Strange flavour combination- some coffee, beetroot, parsnip. Smoky-bitter finish.

Bottle. Black with a medium head. Coffee flavours dominate.Smooth and refreshing with lots of body considering its relatively low strength. Impressive and different.

Pours clear brown with light fluffy head. Aroma surprisingly grassy for the style, and with a pleasing caramel backbone it forms an interesting contrast. Immediately sweety and light on the palate, a robust coffee bitterness and depth develops until a pleasing hop bitterness breaks it all up. The more I think about it, the more it impresses me with its balance and complexity which degrees the low strength of the base beer.

(Cask at Craft Beer Co., 13/06/12). Coffee infused mild. Clear mahogany, decent light-brown head. Light, lightly roasted coffee aroma, bit of caramel sweetness, but not much else in the aroma. Taste is light sweet (less than usual for a mild), pleasant, lightly roasted coffee and quite a "beany", almost vegetable-like taste (interesting, not unpleasant). Perfect balance. Slight bitter aftertaste. Mid-light body, slightly watery, but not too bad. Quite a bit of flavour for 3.6% and very drinkable for the style. Pulled off very well, considering the slightly unusual style.

(draught) pours a hazy copper-brown colour with a frothy beige head. aroma of vanilla, coffee beans, earth and brown sugar, with a hint of herbal hops, lots of chocolate icing and vanilla. flavour is like drinking pure cold coffee, with small hints of vanilla, dark chocolate, grass and a light toasted-bitter finish. very thin body with soft carbonation.

Cask @ CPK London. #12 in the generally excellent ’Freestyle Fridays’ series. Light watery reddish brown color with hardly any head. The nose is light cherry and coffee, some cream and baked bread. The taste is watery creamed coffee, hints of lactose. Some blackberry, but mostly I’m getting watered-down coffee. Roasted malts, some brown sugar and light woody dryness on the finish. Thin on the tongue. Overall, this beer gets a good amount of flavor for the abv, though I didn’t find the flavors to be massively appealing.
