The Jackhammer is a very dark brown ale with a nice reddish hue. Offering a welcome warming sensation, it has a rich malty sweetness. Fruity esters, expected in this style beer, add to the already complex palate and help to provide an immensely satisfying experience!

Draft. I did not enjoy this one as much as expected, primarily because the alcohol permeated through which overwhelmed. I was surprised because this is not that strong in %.

Bottle. First observation is that this is one of those incredible pain in the ass beers that just wonít fit in a glass. First pour results in a half an inch of liquid at the very bottom of the glass, the rest is fluffy beige foam. Five minutes later and I have forced most of the beer into the glass, but Iím a little sick of the whole experience at this point. The final product is a glass with half foam, half liquid... a nice brownish red hue and nice highlighting. Aromas are unimpressive... a kind of apple and pear juice mixed together with a touch of caramel and soap. Flavor is much better than the rough start we got off to. It has a pretty nice peat flavor to it, which compliments the fruity sweetness well and helps bridge it to the alcoholic warmth. It still has a bit of a soapy feel to it, though, and in the aftertaste I pick it up from time to time. This is a pretty hot (alcohol) beer with a smooth and slightly viscous feel on the palate.

UPDATED: NOV 22, 2010 Pours a hazy, ruby-toned brown. Small-to-medium head fades quickly to moderate lacing with fine bubbles. Aroma of dark fruits, cherries, mild oak notes. Itís not bad, but all of the flavors are muted and on the stale side. It takes the "old" part seriously. Moderate body, slightly creamy, almost decent carbonation, mildly sweet with a slight sour, lactic, oaky finish thatís mildly warming. Hints of whisky on the tongue. Passable but not a great old ale. Very "to style" without being "to drink."

Bottle, has a ruby and brown pour with darker brown hues at the edges, there is a little haze in the pour to, made a quick off-white head that collapses to a ring and a bubbled island in the center, there are lots of chunky particles in the glass, this beer has aromas of nut, toasted malt, dark bread, brown sugar and molasses sweetness with faint dark fruit, and flavors of toasted malt, dark bread, brown sugar sweetness with faint chocolate, pretty similar to the aromas, also, this has some pepper like bitterness on the palate, and it appears to have a slight off-ness on the palate, maybe a slight off-ness in taste?, mouth feel is more than medium, gave some dryness on the palate, there is no alcohol warmth on the palate but you know the 8.5% is there, seems to be an ok beer, nothing really stands out in this beer, the alcohol or hop bitterness or combination of both seem to get in the way of fully enjoying this drink, the bitterness is off or just not right, everything is ok except for the finish.
