COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A roasty, dry stout made with real fudge for a subtle chocolate-fudge character without being sweet. Top with whipped cream for a special treat!

We first visited Mackinac Island in spring of 2008 and were instantly smitten. So we couldn’t have been more excited when we were asked to brew a signature Mackinac Island Fudge Stout.

This rich and satisfying beer was inspired by long summer afternoons and lazy weekends spent on the Island. But just like summer on the Island, it’ll be gone before you know it, so drink it up while it’s here!

Pours a dark brown, almost black, with medium tan head, decent lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel, moderate chocolate, and sweetness. Flavor matches well, but definitely needed a bit more chocolate in order to carry the Mackinac Island Fudge name.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass; no bottle dating, but is a recent seasonal release. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense dark tan head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, fudge, toast, dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, and roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of roast/bready malt, fudge, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, fudge, toast, dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, and roasted earthiness. Fair amount of herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, fudge, toast, dark bread, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malt, fudge, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Moderate amount of dryness with only light lingering flavors after a short period the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/chalky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice flavored dry stout style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malt, fudge, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

4oz on tap at the Corner Brewery. Very dark brown, near-black color. Thin ring of khaki head. Caramel, some nice chocolate, coffee, moderate roast. Moderate sweet taste, light to moderate bitter. Good longer malt finish. Medium body. Light carbonation. Mild slick. Some decent chewiness. An alright stout. Kind of sweet and caramely.

Pours a dark brown with no foam head. Aroma is roast, nut, and chocolate. Flavor is mainly roast. The bottle suggests this is a sweet stout, but it drinks more like a dry stout. The fudge adds nothing to this, though it’s a cool idea. Not terrible, but not as advertised either. Worth one try at least.

Some weirdness here and not in a good way...kinda OK dry cocoa stout, but with a metallic after taste that just kept hanging on. I wouldn’t have another one of these.

Served on tap at ABC in Ann Arbor. Poured virtually black with a small but durable tan head. Some chocolate in the nose but very little in the taste where there was a far mor prominent coffee note - this was the reaction of 3-of-3 craft beer drinkers at the table. Very smooth; full body; well chosen low carbonation. A nice stout but lacking the chocolate or fudge note that the names suggests.

Nasty. Smokey. Thin. Yuck. Rated this with another app and BeerBuddy unfortunately won't let me import comments.

On tap in Mckinaw City, pours a dark black pour with a java head. Nose is light sweet chocolate. Taste is light , sweet with no outstanding chocolate or fudge. Pass on this one . Quaff Score 5 / 10

On tap at Mackinaw City Brew House. Pours blak with a nice brown head and aroma of rotate malt and chocolate. Taste is light, of milk chocolate, roasted malt, and light caramel with a creamy finish. Light stout that needs more flavor

I have mixed feelings about this one. It's definitively a dry stout, bordering on bitter (think baking cocoa). There is a semblance of fudge in the flavor, but this type of beer seems to call out to be a sweet stout. The malt base is roasty, but is on the thin side. A little disappointing.
