3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 EricTeusink (116) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - APR 5, 2013
This is listed as a "winter seasonal." I picked mine up in May. Not sure about degradation over time of Alt Bier’s. Not sure I want to go down that rabbit hole today. Pours dark. Hints of coffee and dark chocolate. Of late, I have become a bigger fan of alt biers as a way to go low on the ABV while maintaining flavor. I would like to get the chance to try this beer closer to its bottling date.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Porterguy41 (18) - - FEB 7, 2013
Pours a dark rich color, suttle aroma, a little thin for my taste, not at all what
i expected but still a good brew.

Draft at Arbor Brewpub with meal. Nice medium body ale; like the dark ale taste without the full, heavy feeling some dark ales give me.

draft... this is a super dark alt, all mahogany, nice head... boring nose, the taste is harsh and too strong, not a typical alt, not a fan

Ar: Roasty aroma with notes of chocolate and nuts.
Ap: Pours a deep dark brown with a 3/4" frothy tan head.
T: Rich chocolaty malt body with some mild hop bitterness on the finish.
P: Surprisingly creamy for a medium level of carbonation.
O: Darn good.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Dogbrick (6058) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - MAR 28, 2011
This brew pours a dark brown color with a medium tan head that diminishes steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. The aroma is roasty and malty with notes of hops. Medium body with flavors of sweet roasted malt, hops and a touch of coffee. The finish is roasty with a lingering grainy malt aftertaste. Decent beer overall.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Thorpe429 (4844) - , Illinois, USA - FEB 16, 2011
Reviewed from notes.
Pours a dark brown hat is nearly opaque win a nice off white head. Some lacing. Nose brings a bit of sweet malt that consists of darker chocolate, bringing some dryness as well. Taste and feel come together with a nice dry malt characteristic. The taste is a bit plain wihout much more than some grain and faint flavors behind it, but I like the feel. Drinks well and shows me yet again why I wish this were a more common style.
Serving type: on-tap

1.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 4/20 mbalmer (16) - Michigan, USA - FEB 7, 2011
Single bottle purchased to try.
AROMA: Chocolate malt, coffee, and some bread-like notes. Very roasty.
APPEARANCE: Very pretty pour - dark, opaque (almost black), cream-colored head with some good persistence to it.
TASTE: Much like the Reissdorf Kolsch - don’t judge a beer by its label - but in a bad way. Overwhelming coffee flavor, tasted like burnt grounds with over-roasted chocolate. Couldn’t detect any malt flavor in it...or anything else, actually, through the intense coffee flavor.
PALATE: Oily, slick, and unpleasant. Felt like it painted my tongue with varnish. Absolutely awful.
OVERALL: I didn’t finish this one. Drain-poured it almost immediately after a few additional experimental sips to see if my palate was off (it wasn’t). The coffee/burnt flavor hung around in my mouth for several minutes after drinking this...had to rinse out my mouth with water to get it to go away. Won’t drink this ever again.
