COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A surprisingly easy-drinking dark ale with a medium body, malty palate and a smooth dry finish. Our alt is brewed in the tradition of the German "sticke" or "secret" alt which was a fuller, darker, and higher alcohol alt served unadvertised by German brewpubs at regular ale prices as a reward to regular customers who knew to ask for it.

Very dark, almost black with a thin tan ring of head around the edge of the glass. The aroma seems to be mostly coffee. The taste is kind of like watered down coffee with cream and a bit of malt. Overall I expected more based on the description, but it is drinkable.

Bottle. Overcarbonated, mildly infection, they get what they deserve, not taking care of their bottling. Dark like porter with a tan cola-bubbled head. Nose is heavily acidic muddy yeast, some munich malts, some caramel malts, some mild, dry hops, and some salty soy character as well, showing up more in the flavor. The infection is mild, the butter and chemical flavors aren’t running rampant, and you can get a sense of what they’re trying to do with this beer, but it’s about as far off from altbier as I’ve ever experienced. Chewy soy and char belong nowhere near altbier. Finishes disorganized and acidic. Not good at all.

sample at brewpub. Poured dark brown with a minimal head. It is very smooth, dry, and easily drinkable.

Black, clear color with modest head. Mostly malt flavor, with some sweetness and little hop bitterness. IMHO this is a good example of the style.

AOF (306) - Naperville, Illinois, USA - OCT 14, 2007
Dark brown, almost black in color with full creamy white head. Dark roasted malt aromas with a bit of nuttiness, bittersweet chocolate, and an herbal aftertaste strangely enough like Dr. Pepper. Well carbonated and highly drinkable. Medium to full in body with a creamy texture and nice clean finish.

This black ale poured with a massive tan head and a malty aroma. This beer is extremely carbonated. There is a pleasant slightly sweet smoked malt flavor.

12 oz. bottle from Dansting. Pour is an explosively large tan / off-white head. Mahogany color. Aroma is nutty and smoky. Taste is a nice nut maltiness with a slightly roasted finish. Nice subtle flavors and a very drinkable beer.

Dark brown with massive light brown head. Malty flavor with some roasted chocolate and something that is a bit of a metallic-like bitterness. Not bad.
