COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular.
There are two schools of thought when it comes to oyster stouts - some believe that they should be served cold and go well with a plate of oysters. We believe that a proper oyster stout should be made with oysters. We’ve used six different grains, including oats, wheat and roasted barley, and Fuggles hops for that traditional stout character. We’ve then added whole oysters, shells and all, during the last fifteen minutes of the boil. The result is a smooth chocolatey stout that leaves you wanting more.

Cask at GBBF 2010. A dark red-brown beer with a thin tan head. The aroma has strong notes of roasted malt, as well as medium notes of soy sauce and oats. The flavor is sweet wtih notes of caramel, malt, soy sauce, and oats, leading to a very roasted finish.

Cask at the Craft Beer Co. It pours jet black, with a thin, light tan head. The nose is soy sauce, salted liquorice, seaweed, smoke, toffee, treacle and varnish. The taste is salted liquorice, roasted malt, treacle, tar, pepper, caramel, molasses, smoke and varnish, with a long roasty finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. A very flavoursome brew for the percentage. Nice.

Cask at the Hobgoblin, Reading. Pitch black in colour with a loose milk chocolate coloured head; chocolate malt aroma; the taste is salty and fishy to start - the first Oyster Stout I’ve ever had that actually tastes of the sea! - then the malts take hold, leading to a sweet, but thin, velvety body that reminds me of bedtime drinks - Ovaltine and Horlicks; the finish is long, dry, milky, silky and malty, although you can just about detect an underlying bitterness. I thought this was excellent, but I expect that others may consider it otherwise - defintely a taste to be acquired!

A Mes rate. Cask at the Rake.
Pretty much black with a thin beige head. Good chocolate and fruit and coffee with just a lick of spice and a good dry feel. Slight lactose. Good sour fruit hit in the finish. Nice beer.

Cask-conditioned at The Royal Oak, Bath 14/9/08. Near black in colour with a decent, tight tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, bitter chocolate and a faint hint of the seaside. Full mouth feel, with plenty more roastiness and chocolate, some graininess and a decent bitter finish. Another good dark beer from Arbor.
