CharlesDarwin (1312), State College, Pennsylvania, USA May 9, 2008 On tap at the brewpub. Deep black-brown pour, with a well-sustaining off-white creamy head. Light roast malt, chocolate, caramel and pecan pie aroma. Tangy alcohols. Ahh, finally something I can sink my teeth into here. This is delicious. A good, swirling blend of caramel sauce, crisp roasted chocolate, balanced alcohol and general malt complexity. Nice creamy texture, with the right amount of carbonation. A bit of earthy salts back up a well caramelized malt profile. Chewy, but not sweet. Strong, but not overbearing. A bit of leafiness on the backend. Delightful. Balanced. Richly flavored. Very nice job with a faithful rendition. May a touch safe and thin-tending, but nothing I’m going to complain about.
Schroppfy (1719), Ohio, USA Apr 25, 2008 On tap at ABC. Definitely a real Baltic Porter; has the characteristic sweet, slightly sourish flavor moods (chestnut, molasses), alternating every few moments or so, with a real spicy noble hop presence. Almost as good as a nicely aged Perkunos, just a little less thick and slippery in the body as that one can be. Good. HailSquishface (13), Ferndale, Michigan, USA Apr 1, 2008 I really liked this at the WBF. I saw on their website it was on tap so I had to try it again.
Pours black with nice red highlight when held up to the light. Thin tan head.
Smell: Sweet malt, dark fruit, chocolate, and bubblegum.
Taste: Chocolate, a hint of coffee, spicy hops, and fruity notes.
Medium body and carbonation. Finishes with a burnt sweetness.
I hope this makes it’s way into bottles. I’d be fine with it replacing the dubbel. Silphium (1976), Lansing, Michigan, USA Feb 26, 2008 2008 MBG Winter Beer Fest. Nearly opaque brown with a thin tan head. Grapey, sweet body with bubblegum, chocolate, and a touch of roasted malt. Interesting and weird, but too sugary. ogglethorp (733), Ohio, USA Feb 18, 2008 On tap. Pours dark brown with a thin beige colored head. Aroma is malt, faint roast and chocolate. Flavor is malty, some light chocolate and maybe coffee notes, light hops. Palate is medium bodied, medium carbonation, finished somewhat sweet. Decent.
