11026 (1886), USA Oct 19, 2004 Cask hand pull. Nice creamy white head, good lacing. Amberish colored with haze. Nice smooth mouthfeel. Malt was well done. Perhaps a recipe modification from earlier ratings. Hops were earthy and floral. Perhaps a little much on hops for a true ESB, more like a mild IPA, but very nicely done IMHO. hennes (932), Fountain, Michigan, USA Mar 22, 2002 Really interesting. Its monstrous lemony hops are subdued, charmed if you will, by a remarkably creamy texture. There isn’t much malt backbone to speak of, otherwise this might rank right up there with the best. AustinMilbarge (681), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Apr 17, 2005 A rusty, hazy color. Pretty white head. Handpull, me gusta. Chewy malts. A little tang. Citrus hops. As it warmed, complexities were enhanced. The buzz I got suggested more than 5%. Lacing was very nice, like growth rings on a tree, but down the side of the glass. JoeM500 (1877), Chicago (little italy), Illinois, USA Nov 8, 2004 Bright orange with a frothy head. Fruity and perfumy hops nose was a welcome sign! Soft body from the handpull, smooth malty brew with lots of citrusy, bitter hops at the finish, Very good, ordered another full pint. Glouglouburp (2113), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jul 7, 2008 In short: A light honeyed English blonde ale of some kind. From the cask it was quite good. Probably very ordinary on regular tap.
How: From the cask at brewpub
The look: Partly cloudy blonde body with a little white head
In long: Honeyed fruits is the main attraction. Honey pears, honeyed bananas, honeyed peaches, a little caramel touch and a twist of lemon. The juicy/fruity/honeyed body is followed by hops that add a welcomed contrasting dryness with a mild bitterness. Lacks the crispness that I like from the style. However the cask conditioning was top-notch. Smooth bubbles and velvety moutfeel. Overall it is a very average ESB but the superb cask conditioning really ups my score to a superior ESB but if you remove the cask… well… you’re gonna have beer all over the floor.
