Black pour with a small amount of head. Nice aroma of roasted malt and floral hops. Taste is slightly sweet at first mixed with roasted malt and then the floral hops take over. Slightly dry finish with a hoppy aftertaste. A great example of a black ipa.

Liked it so much on tap at the pub I got a growler to go. Pours a dark black but you can somehow tell it is not real thick as the look would imply. A very different mix of flavors from figs to burnt malt. In between the two extremes I got coffee, chocolate, and some type of resin like pine tar. Like I know what pine tar tastes like? The alcohol is all but hidden. The hops are strop but someone remain in the background.

Nice piney and resinous nose. Pours an opaque black with a dusting of light tan head clinging to the side of the glass. This is black IPA that is ruled by the hops, strong pine and bitter notes, with just a hint of roast and chocolate in the finish. The bitter finish stays around for a long time, lingering. This is a solid IPA, it doesn’t have as much in the roasted notes that I look for in a black IPA.

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
On tap at Arcadia. Black appearance with slight brown hue and thin white head. Citrus-y flavor with full-bodied finish. Though last years batch was better, this is my favorite black IPA by a long shot.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Gorgeous black with a tinge of ruby when held to the light.
Dank grapefruit nose. Getting some tobacco notes. Unlike everything I’ve ever smelled. So intense for a Black IPA.
Taste is so unique. Hop citrus assault up front then you’re slapped on the back end like a stout almost (coffee, chocolate, and the tobacco).
Really nice texture and smooth finish. You don’t know the alcohol until you feel it at the end of your glass.
Home run from Arcadia. This should give them some recognition then deserve.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draught at TJ’s: Aroma of malt, hops, pine, resin, and some roasting. Poured very dark brown/very deep orange in color with a medium-sized, creamy, dense, brown head that diminished but lasted throughout. Clear. Sparkling. Good lacing. Flavor is light to medium sweet and medium bitter. Tastes of malt, roasting, hops, pine, and resin. Medium body. Oily, then lightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Malt, hop, pine, resin finish is lightly dry. 8.5%ABV is completely hidden throughout.

[4110-20111112] Tap. Maple-caramel-infused roasted bread aroma. Clear, dark red black body with a long-lasting creamy off-white head and some thick lacing. More mapled bread in the flavour with a bitter bite in the finish. Medium-full body. Seems in great shape, like the maple sugar hints with the sweetness that usually accompanies it. (7/4/7/3/16) 3.7

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at Ashley’s Ann Arbor. Pours really dark brown to almost black with really light tan head. Aromas of bright citrus and piney hops, with some roast but a really nice hop presence. Flavor up front Is nice amount of roasty malts, with little bit chocolate, tons if piney and bitter hops, and there is some heat from the abc as well. Nice big black IPA. Really nice beer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
2011-11-12. Very dark brown, soft creamy beige head and lace. First sip is really strange. Soft sweet malt, fruity character, bit of sugar. Fruit that I can’t put my finger on. Caramel/brown sugar notes, hint of something that is not cherry but that’s the word I come up with. Mild aroma, fruit, mild dusty malt, ephemeral whispers of cocoa. I like it but it is not what I expected from a black IPA at all, and not particularly bitter. On tap at Ashley’s, Ann Arbor
