3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Meh...a decent run of the mill black IPA. Nothing special here. Aroma was very nice. Strong green hops with a hint of roasted malt. Pour was a nice deep dark brown with a one finger tan head. Taste was a little bland, but was OK. Strong push and pull between the roasted malt and hops. Decent carbonation.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Practically black in color with a light brown colored head, this has an almost odd roasted malt character thatís a little sweet, a little roasted, and a little hoppy. Itís balanced, but thereís still something odd about its aroma. In the mouth it seems very much like a dark strong ale.
If you convince yourself that itís not a double black, and rather just a straight up dark strong ale, this is actually a better beer. NowÖ letís pretend this is a strong ale and get on with our lives. Itís nice. Smooth, roasted, strong. You can really pick up the alcohol in this. Nice, and easy drinking for what it is.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a dark, murky black with small head and small to medium lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, a hint of caramel and maybe a touch of coffee. Herbal citrus. Moderately bitter throughout. Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. Long, bitter finish predominated by darkly roasted malt. Pretty good.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle split at Tonyís house, traded with one of the NJ/NY crew I think - notes fail me but cheers to whoever, 19/05/13.
Very dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head that clears to the edge and leaves a small film.
Nose is light on hops, roasty notes, bitter chocolate, dark toffee.
Taste comprises hops, pine, cocoa.
Medium bodied with fine carbonation, dry finish with some hop bitterness.
Decent enough CDA.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Ar: Dark raisin, some spicy resinous hops, brown sugar, soy sauce.
Ap: Deep brown - small light tan head with decent retention and a thin foam ring and cover.
T: Raisin and brown sugar, some orange - medium-high bitterness, with a herbal edge - fairly sweet - finish is dried fruit and citrus.
P: Medium-full body with a high, very full and creamy, carbonation - finish is medium-dry.
O: Perhaps this bottle had too much age on it, but it doesnít taste like much of a black IPA - however, it comes across as a pretty tasty robust porter.

Had it on tap at World of Beer in Evanston IL. Poured a coffee hue with a light white head and thick even lacing. The aroma is very slight and the taste is IPA smooth.

2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 7/20
This poured a medium cloudy brown with a beige head. Aroma was soapy hops and cigarette ash. Flavor was ashy and soapy. Fairly offensive to the nose and mouth.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle: The aroma consists of chocolate, fruit, perfume, citrus, and pine. It pours a dark brown, but when held to the light, it;s an orangish-brown with some transparency. It has a one finger khaki head that quickly fades to a thin film outlined by a thicker ring. There is some very sporadic and thin webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with a quick dose of light fruit and chocolate. The chocolate builds into the finish and the fruit is quickly dominated by orange, orange peel, floral/ perfume flavors, pine, and roast. Itís medium bodied with mild carbonation. Overall, the fruitiness up front and the citrus/ pine/floral hops in the finish are strong enough that this is one of the few Black IPAís that lives up to the name...as opposed to just another hoppy Porter. With that said, on the hedonistic scale, I like some of the "hoppy Porter" versions of Black IPAís better.
